The Politics and Society class were in the audience of the Claire Byrne Live show on Monday 18th February. From beginning to end it was a great experience. The topic that was discussed was Brexit and the effect it may have on The Peace Process in Northern Ireland. This was very fitting as all the students in attendance had just returned from a trip to a Belfast and Derry as part of a 5th and 6th year History and Politics and Society school tour. Students were allowed to submit comments or questions before the show began and Rachael Walsh and Saidhbh O’ Callaghan were chosen to participate. Unfortunately time ran out in the show before Claire got to us. At the end of the show Claire Byrne kindly spent some time talking with the class. The girls enjoyed the evening thoroughly and took home a lot from it. Some even got to shake hands with the legendary Christy Moore.

When Moya Quinlan qualified as a solicitor in 1946, she was one of just two women in a class with more than 50 men. Nevertheless, she would go on to become the first woman to be elected a council member of the Law Society of Ireland in 1968 and its first woman president in 1980. When she passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on February 12th, she left behind a transformed solicitors’ profession in which 52 per cent of all practitioners are women. www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/moya-quinlan-obituary-first-woman-president-of-the-law-society-1.3795211

December was a very busy time for the Saint Vincent de Paul Conference in Sion Hill. Over 3,000 euro was raised by 4th and 5 th year students who spent a full Sunday bag packing in Dunnes Stores, Cornelscourt. The monies raised helped greatly to fund Christmas parties for the children of Kilinarden and children from Saint Michael's House. These parties were enjoyed in equal measure by the the students of Sion Hill. The Student Council along with the Saint Vincent de Paul also put together 200 ‘care packages’ for parents of sick children in the NMH and Crumlin who had to spend Christmas in Hospital. They contained many practical items along with a Christmas treat. Thank you to all who donated and helped out at any of these events, it would not have been possible without you.
