It is the Holy Grail of farming and country life festivals, and during the pandemic its absence has been keenly felt. More than 90,000 flocked to the fields of Ratheniska, Co Laois for the opening day of the ploughing and among these were 127 TY students from the Friary. The 900 acre site is the biggest to date with 1,700 trade stands and 37 kilometres of tracks. There was something for everyone machinery, fashion shows, country music, competitions, freebies and great fun with friends. Many thanks to Mr J Power, Fr Gerry, Mr M McGrath, Mr C Walsh, Ms Dowley, Ms McGann and SNA Niamh for travelling with the students today.

Helen Russell - The end of an era.

"Hello, St. Augustine's College, Helen speaking!" For the last 31 years that friendly and warm voice of our secretary Helen Russell greeted you. When you entered the doors of the Friary, she was the first face you'd see where you were welcomed with a big smile before she would slide open the window. This September, Helen decided it was time to take her leave from the Friary, starting her retirement and the next chapter of her life. Throughout the years, she was a massive support to the hundreds of parents and guardians, solving any issues or worries they had, especially as their children transitioned from primary to secondary school. When they phoned the school and were greeted by an unfamiliar voice their first request was always “Hello, is Helen there?”. As Fr. Gerry Horan remarked, "She represented the place so well. She embodied the Augustinian ethos so naturally, caring about everyone. An extremely caring and helpful person by nature, Helen tried to make sure that everyone that came to the window, left happy. She would go out of her way to help you”. During her time at the Friary Helen took on more than the job title entailed, even organising and running school trips across Europe to great success, leaving both students and staff with cherished memories. Helen started at St. Augustine's College in September 1991 when the culture of the Friary was changing. It was the second year that girls were enrolling in the school and the boarding school was phasing out. During her time in the school Helen worked alongside four principals, Fr. Moran, Mr. Joe Moynihan, Ms Ailbhe Ni Neachthain and current principal Michael O'Sullivan. In her early days at the Friary she worked alone before being joined by Fr. Matt Cooney in 1995. The two have worked hand in hand for the last 27 years. While Helen was the face and voice of the partnership Fr. Cooney reports that he "was the brains behind the operation." Fr. Cooney has only kind words to say about his colleague and friend and without hesitation states they 'never had a fight in all their years of work'. We wish Helen many years of health and happiness as she begins her next chapter. No doubt she will be kept busy with her many social activities and doting on her grandchildren that she always spoke so proudly of.
LCVP Trip

Today in the glorious September sunshine our LCVP students enjoyed a visit to two local enterprises. The purpose of this trip was to enable the students to write up their Enterprise Action Plan which forms part of their Link Modules Portfolio. The first stop was to St Mary's Cistercian Abbey in Glencairn. We received a warm welcome from the 26 sisters. We joined them in the church for terce, this was followed by a talk from Sr Sarah about life in Glencairn. We then viewed two of the sisters enterprises one was Eucharistic bread making and the other was the greeting and memorial card making. The students got valuable knowledge for their project. Next stop was to Cappoquin House and Gardens where we got to walk through the Orchards. We learned about growing apples and the strict quality and guidelines that fulling a Musgrave Group contract demands. We really got to see the Orchard in all its glory in a year of high apple yields. A great day visiting local enterprises.
