The Irish Flag, a tricolour of green, white and orange proudly flies outside Mount Carmel. The flag was designed in 1848 by a group of French ladies and presented to Irish patriot, Thomas Francis Meagher. It is modelled on the French tricolour, blue, white and red. Thomas Francis Meagher flew the flag for the first time in public in his native city, Waterford on 7th of March 1848. The flag is intended to symbolise the inclusion of and the desire for unity of the different traditions on the island. Flown over the GPO during the 1916 Rising, adapted as the flag of the Irish Free State in 1922, and formally confirmed as the National Flag in the 1937 Constitution.
