On Friday the 8th of March five of our T.Y students; Leah Flahive, Georgia Duff, Conor Hogan, Greg Horan and Eoin Shaehan took part in a schools debate organised by the K.D.Y.S group in listowel on the introduction of the new Garda Age Card. The event took place in Causeway Comprehensive School and our opposition was the well-decorated, veteran debaters of Presentation Secondary School Listowel. Our school performed admirably with some very well constructed points of debate. Conor Hogan made a powerful and persuasive opening speech, Leah gave a detailed description of the difficulty enforcing the new Garda age card, Caitlin and Greg made excellent rebuttal points which was all backed up by the fantastic well-constructed arguments of the brilliant Georgia Duff and Eoin Shaehan. In the end we were defeated by the narrowest of margins despite the fact that this was the student’s first debate they had ever undertaken. Much had been learned and at our next undertaking we will take the world of stopping.

Kerry Robotics Competition

Yesterday Oisin, Ciaran, Denis, Greg, Eamon, Jessica and Caitlin, all from TY competed in the inaugural Kerry robotics competition. We placed joint third after some excellent driving skills from Captain Denis, brilliant programming skills by Greg, tactical deliberation by Eamon, quick modifications by Ciaran and Oisin and negotiating skills second to none by Caitlin and Jessica. In the end we were unlucky not to progress to the final having lost the decider in the semi by a point. The aim of each match is to work with another school against two others each combining their scores at the end. Scoring points comes from a robotic autonomous 15 second period at the beginning of each round and then a 2.30 minute remote controlled section. Points can be scored by flipping caps to the correct colour and changing flags also. Both of which Denis scored more than any other team. (It was generally the other school that let us down.) All in all a great day out and many lessons learned for next years competition.
