On Friday the 10th of November, Billy, a volunteer at PATH, Portlaoise Action To Homelessness, came to talk to a group of third years who are focusing on homelessness for their JC CSPE action project. Billy has been a volunteer at PATH since it began in February, 2015. Seven volunteers at PATH go to Dublin each Saturday night and although they do not return to Portlaoise until hours such as one or two am, Billy says that taking the time to talk to each of the people they help is just as important as the supplies they provide them with. Billy told us that talking to the people is his favourite part of his volunteer work as he meets really lovely, kind and interesting people. PATH supplies the homeless with toiletries, tea and coffee, chocolate and most importantly, sleeping bags. Billy says that they meet 80% of the same people when they travel for 12 kilometres around Dublin city each week. The homeless heavily rely on the Hostels for showers and warmth whenever they can and Billy described that although the majority of homeless are in Dublin that, “a hostel in Portlaoise is badly needed!” To volunteer at PATH you must be over 18 but in the future, the members of PATH would like to encourage secondary level students to help out in ways such as packing the supplies that will be brought to Dublin. There will be a drive for supplies held in our school, next week, from the 13th to the 17th of November to build consciousness of National Hunger and Homeless awareness week. We would like our school to participate and put every effort into finding supplies that can be donated this week. There will be collection boxes for all donations in the GPA, the Nano Nagle Suite and Mr Moss’ room, 1C02. All donations welcome but PATH has a huge need for things like toiletries, tea & coffee, chocolate and hats and scarves. Our class and the PATH organisation would really appreciate your support in helping those in need. -3C CSPE Class
