Poem of the Week

Poet Simon Armitage recalls a regrettable incident from his schooldays, when he played a prank on a girl by heating the handles of a scissors in a Bunsen burner and handing them to the girl, scalding her hand. Looking back, he realises that he was simply trying to tell her that he loved her. Instead of being offered a ring in marriage, the girl is now eternally left with two burnt rings on her hand… perhaps not the most successful love story ever captured in a poem!
I Am Very Bothered by Simon Armitage
I am very bothered when I think
of the bad things I have done in my life.
Not least that time in the chemistry lab
when I held a pair of scissors by the blades
and played the handles
in the naked lilac flame of the Bunsen burner;
then called your name, and handed them over.
Oh, the unrivalled stench of branded skin
as you slipped your thumb and middle finger in,
then couldn't shake off the two burning rings. Marked,
the doctor said, for eternity.
Don't believe me, please, if I say
that was just my butterfingered way, at thirteen,
of asking you if you would marry me.
Le Chéile Education Center Building to commence

Members of the Le Chéile Trust, the Sisters of the Religious of Christian Education, members of the Siol Board and the Our Lady's Board of Management with the Principal and Deputy Principals gathered for the ceremonial 'turning of the sod' yesterday to mark the start of the build of the Le Chéile Education Center where the old lodge currently stands. The Board of Management of Our Lady's are delighted that the Education Centre will be situated in the school grounds. There will be some limited disruption to the usual school access during the build. Pedestrian access to the school will be relocated to the other side of the hockey pitch. Our students and school community will be given prior notice of this. We appreciate your co-operation during the building works.
