TY Update & What’s On Next Week

As we start the new year we would firstly like to welcome Ms. Bateman to our wonderful team! We are so excited to have her as part of our team and we all look forward to her being part of our journey and growth in 2022. Ms. Bateman had a fantastic start in her new role as she accompanied TY1’s on their 3rd Development Day. Together they explored many of the historic beautiful churches that Dublin city has to offer, while also engaging in a voyage of stillness, inward reflection and prayer. TY2’s were brought back in time and experienced a multitude of attractions our city has to offer. From reading an original decree from Éamon de Valera to sharing how grandparents were involved in the visit of John F. Kennedy to Ireland in 1963, students got a sense of what life was like in Dublin from World War 1 right through the 1916 rising to present day Dublin filled with Music from U2. They even visited the ducks in St. Stephen’s Green and discussed how gunfire was stopped for 1 hour each day during the Easter rising to allow James Kearney, the park keeper, to feed the ducks. After this little visit, they made their way to the State Apartments at Dublin Castle. They were lucky enough to stand in St. Patrick’s Hall and watch as preparations were underway for the celebration of the States 100th anniversary this Sunday. The day wasn't completed without a further Historical journey through EPIC, the Irish Emigration Museum. TY3’s had a first class day as they completed their certified first aid course. TY4’s took to the airways as they experienced the amazing mobile recording studio brought right to the OLS doorstep. They benefited from professional industry training, honed their presentation skills and enjoyed recording their own radio segments in the high spec studio. There is so much to look forward to in 2022 for our TY Students! Fighting Words and Shout Out workshops take place later this month. Work Experience preparations are in full swing for blocks 2 and 3 due to commence on the 7th February. Development Day 4 takes place on the 8th of March, The advanced Barista Course the 9th of March, Development Day 5 the 24th of March and Carlingford the 30th March. To name but a few! There is also a whisper coming from the OLS kitchens that the widely popular Great TY Bake Off is set to make a return. A big well done to our budding Economists in TY3 who today completed the first round in Generation €uro representing OLS. We wish them the very best of luck in the next round. This week TY students had the opportunity to sign up for Toastmasters which is back later this month in Terenure college, ROCKMUN in Blackrock College and Work Experience at the National Gallery of Ireland. Next week will see our TY’s have the opportunity to sign up for Gym & Nutrition classes. These will run on a weekly basis for 8 to 10 weeks with a fully qualified Personal Trainer. The aim of these classes is to learn about the benefits of staying healthy and active and how you can do this. Stay tuned on Google Classroom for more details on these classes which are being provided free of charge.
