Dear parent/guardian, I am writing to you to ask for your assistance with a serious issue that has caused great concern in recent weeks. The number of cars entering the school premises both before and after school has become a very real health and safety concern. The number of cars, the speed of travel and the nature of the driving has increased greatly the chances of a serious accident occurring. Witness accounts have described gridlock at certain times due to sheer volume, reversing onto footpaths and even playing pitches to turn etc. It is my worry that an accident will occur where at very least damage to cars will be the outcome and possibly injury to occupants or pedestrians. I am appealing to parents/guardians to consider carefully if it is necessary to drop/collect students right to/from the door of the school, even in poor weather. Primary schools generally do not permit any cars other than staff on site so I'm not sure why we feel that older students can not walk a short distance to and from school. Can I ask that students are dropped off /collected from the road and/or the mart car park for example where possible. I hope that you can understand my concerns for the safety of all, in particular our students on foot or travelling by bicycle. Thank you for your support in this matter. J Leonard

The Ombudsman for Children needs your help

Dear Friends, The Ombudsman for Children needs your help to hear from children aged 12 to 17 about children’s mental health and mental health services. Can you please help us have children to complete this survey: The survey should take about 5 minutes to complete. For Children The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, works to make sure that children (everyone under 18) have their rights respected in Ireland. One part of his job is to listen to what children think. You can get more information about Niall and the work of the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) at www.oco.ie. You can find more information about children’s rights at www.oco.ie/itsyourright We know that mental health and services to help children with their mental health are an important issue for children. Many children have told us this. We would like to know more about children’s mental health, understand more about what causes mental health difficulties for children, and what might help improve children’s mental health. That is why we are asking you to fill in this survey. We are not asking for your name or address or any other information that would tell us or anyone else who you are or what you think. Your opinions and ideas really matter, whether your mental health is good, if you are experiencing mental health difficulties or if you have had difficulties in the past. We hope you will share them with the OCO so that we can keep working to improve things for all children in Ireland. You also need to agree to take part so don’t forget to tick the box below and ask a parent or guardian to do the same! For Parents/Guardians If you are the parent/guardian of a child under 18, it would be great if you could ask your child/children to fill in the survey themselves, or by supporting them to complete the survey as necessary. You also need to give your consent for your child to take part. If you have more than one child under 18, a separate survey should be filled in by each child. Link to survey: oco.ie/mental-health-survey The survey will stay open until 7th December at midnight! Thank you for your help. If you have any questions about the survey, please email education@oco.ie.
