Updates - including no classes 4th February, mock exams, 6th year study refunds, Strasbourg refunds
Created : 01 Feb 2021, 5:32 PM

Dear parents/guardians and students,
I hope you are keeping well and that this week of remote learning has got off to good start. Thank you all for your continued engagement - we are fully aware of the challenges remote learning presents and all we ask is that everybody does their very best to engage as fully as possible.
Please note that there will be no online engagement by teachers or classes this Thursday, 4th February due to online Junior Cycle inservice for all teachers. This is a scheduled day of inservice that the school has no say in as to whether it goes ahead or not and would have been a day of school closure in any case. Hopefully the students can use this day to catch up with work, study or take a break from the screens.
As you are aware from media reports, there are ongoing discussions at government level with the various stakeholders about the plans to reopen schools safely and with regard to arrangements for the Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate examinations. We await further guidance over the coming days.
You will remember in mid January I provided an update regarding mock examinations based on the information available at that time and based on reopening on 1st February,. The latest plan regarding mock exams is as follows:
Examcraft are the providers of mock exam papers. They are keen to protect the integrity of the exam papers and so are planning to release exam papers so that mock exams can take place remotely if necessary.
Should schools not reopen on 22nd February for exam students, Examcraft will be offering remote mock exams to a fixed timetable commencing 22nd February. All information pertaining to the exam, including the timetable and a guide for students will be emailed to each school shortly. In this event, all information will be communicated to parents and students through the school as soon as it is available.
After the 22nd February, if exam students return to schools, mock exams can be scheduled to the timetables of individual schools and details will be made available as soon as possible.
The cost of mock papers and external correction is as follows:
Junior Cycle €110
Leaving Certificate €120
Leaving Certificate Applied €75
Payment will be possible through Easy Payments through the school website shortly. An email will also be sent to parents/guardians with details. Please pay the required amount as soon as possible to avoid delays with corrections.
Re 6th year study
We have made the decision to refund those who had paid for 6th year study which we had hoped to run from January until May. While the situation remains so uncertain and the amount of money paid is significant, we feel it is appropriate to refund rather than hold the money any longer. When school reopens we will consider the viability of running study at that point. Please allow a few days for refunds to process and they will go back to the source from which you paid.
Refund of Strasbourg trip deposit
Last year a number of Transition Year students were due to visit the European Parliament. Unfortunately the trip was postponed due to Covid. There was hope that the trip might still take place but that has not proven possible. Those who had paid the student contribution towards the trip will be refunded shortly.
Today marks the beginning of Spring - a time of change and hope. There is much to be thankful for and many reasons to be hopeful - "Spring will come and so will happiness. Hold on. Life will get warmer"
Kind regards
J Leonard

Update regarding school closure and wellbeing resources
Created : 29 Jan 2021, 4:16 PM
Archived : 29 Mar 2021, 12:00 AM
Dear parents/guardians and students,
I hope you are keeping well and looking forward to the weekend. We have come to the end of the third week of remote teaching and learning and the level of engagement remains very impressive indeed. Well done to the students for this and also a special thank you to the parents who are facilitating it and juggling work commitments too. My thanks to all of our teachers and SNAs who continue to do their very best to continue teaching and learning in these very challenging circumstances.
I have today received confirmation that schools will not reopen on February 1st as had been reported through the media. The communication I received is as follows:
"29 January 2021
Dear Principal
As you are aware, the Government has made a decision on foot of public health advice to extend the level 5 restriction measures in place to supress the spread of Covid-19, and as part of these measures to continue this phase of school closure at present. This decision has been made in the context of wishing to avoid the movement of the full one-million strong school-going population daily. The closure of schools will be kept under ongoing review by Government. It is a priority for Government to address the needs of children with special educational needs and provide additional supports for these children during this period of closure, in line with public health advice. The Department of Education is engaging closely with stakeholder representatives during this limited period, to work towards achieving consensus on a satisfactory way forward to ensure a safe phased return of children with special educational needs to inschool learning. This remains a high priority for all partners. The Department is also continuing to work with education partners to ensure that all schools can safely fully reopen, in line with public health advice.
You will have received updated information and guidance in recent bulletins, and it may be helpful to summarise these here, along with some further items that may be useful
to parents and the wider school community.
Yours faithfully
Deirdre Shanley
Assistant Secretary"

Curriculum Tagged Resources
The Department’s Education portal Scoilnet (www.scoilnet.ie/) contains some 21,000 curriculum tagged resources that can be used by teachers, students and parents to support the continuity of learning in the remote environment.
Wellbeing supports
The National Educational Psychological Service of the Department of Education, NEPS, has developed an updated series of resources and animation videos for parents and students during this period of school closures. These build on previous materials that proved popular with parents. The videos feature important updated wellbeing advice and guidance, and include tips on how students can stay positive, active and connected, and how parents can support their child’s daily routine.
Irish language and sign language interpretation versions are also available and are posted on the Department’s twitter feed on @Education_Ire and on gov.ie/schools.

Supports for parents of children with special educational needs
The National Council for Special Education has a range of resources for parents of children with special educational needs, including useful material on a broad list of supportive topics, and short focused video materials designed to provide advice and guidance to parents. These are available on ncse.ie and disseminated through their twitter feed @ncseirl.
The NCSE is also operating a dedicated phone line for parents of children with special educational needs during this period of school closure, offering support and guidance; the number is 01 603 3456 and it is open during office hours.
Support for Traveller parents:
The Department has produced a video in partnership with Pavee Point for Traveller parents on supporting their children during school closures, which is available here:
www.gov.ie/en/publication/a04fc-advice-for-students-and-theirfamilies/#support-for-traveller-parents-while-schools-are-closed
In addition to the above the National Educational Psychology Service (NEPS) has provided the following suite of resources which students/parents may find useful to support their wellbeing during this time:
"As you know classes reverted to remote learning on Monday 11th for the month of January...We are aware of the difficulties faced by families during this pandemic and we know that on-line education is a challenge. We ask that you continue to encourage your son/daughter to engage with on line classes and school work to the greatest extent possible, but encourage you to be realistic about your child’s needs and your own needs.
We are especially mindful of exam students and the stress that school closure can bring. When thinking about how we cope with uncertainty and stress, it can be helpful to remind ourselves of these three key messages:
Stay Responsible & Informed
Stay Active & Connected
Stay Positive & Calm
On the attached PDF we have created links to a range of resources which you may find helpful."
I sincerely hope that the above is useful as you try to navigate this period. I will continue to update you as soon as I receive any communications.
Best wishes

Final reflection for Catholic Schools Week

As we come to the end of Catholic Schools Week 2021, it is timely to consider some reflections on the importance of hope.
"You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own" Michelle Obama
"May your choices reflect your hope's, not your fears" Neldon Mandela

February Walking Challenge
Created : 28 Jan 2021, 9:04 PM

For the month of CPC the PE department invites all students to participate in the ‘Walk Around the World Challenge’. The aim of this is for the school community to come together and collectively walk a total of 60000km. A daunting number but this would work out as each student walking about 2km a day!
All students are asked to take a screenshot of their weekly distance walked and submit it each Monday morning on their respective PE Google Classrooms. It would be fantastic if we could get as many students involved to create a real sense of school community and pride in CPC. It is important to remember that any exercise is in line with the HSE guidelines that are currently in place.
The challenge will run for the whole month of February, beginning on Monday the 1st. Weekly workouts and quizzes will continue to be posted in association with the walking challenge. Please find attached a photo outlining the challenge.

As we continue to celebrate Catholic Schools Week let us ponder how members of the Christian faith have been challenged and how they met those challenges.
"Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which He blesses the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are His body. Christ has no body on earth but yours."
