End of Term Assessments

Dear Parent/Guardian, I hope this note finds you and your family well as we begin the season of Advent and the run-up to the much anticipated Christmas break. I am looking forward to you joining Summerhill’s virtual presentation on Monday, 7 December, 7.00 pm. Please find the link below for the Zoom Meeting. This is a great opportunity to learn about the School’s ambitious masterplan and for me to answer your questions. End of Term assessments will take place from Wednesday 9th December to Wednesday 16th December. All students have been given a timetable for their assessments and details from their teachers about what to revise. In 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year, assessments will last for one 50 minute class. In 5th and 6th Year, assessments will take place in a double class, lasting 90 minutes. Please note that there is no study leave during this period. If a student is not doing an exam, they simply follow their timetable as normal which gives all students, particularly those in Senior House the opportunity to continue to work through their respective courses. By doing the exams slightly earlier than normal, it also creates the necessary space for papers to remain in a sealed envelope for 72 hours so they are safe for staff to correct. Please note that classes for Transition Year and LCA will continue as normal. Our Christmas Jumper/Non-uniform day has been organised by the members of the student council and will take place on Thursday December 17th in aid of St Vincent DePaul and Sligo Social Services. We ask that students bring in a donation of 2 Euro on the day. On a positive note, last week we had a visit from an inspector from the Department of Education and Skills who looked at our Covid response plan and the measures we had in place to keep everyone safe. The report arrived yesterday and confirmed that we had all the relevant procedures and steps in place to help prevent the spread of the virus. As you will be aware, there were two scheduled days for the school to close earlier in the year, at the end of September and again in November, but given the uncertainty over a potential lockdown, we made the decision to stay open. Consequently, the Board of Management has decided the school will close for the Christmas holidays on Friday 18th December at 1.20pm. This will also facilitate a deep clean of the school and an essential upgrade to our fire alarm system which can only take place at the beginning of the following week. Can I take this opportunity to thank you all sincerely for your support over this most challenging of terms. The work done by our caretaking staff, teaching staff and indeed by our students to keep the school safe is a  credit to everyone. I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas and I look forward to welcoming everyone back to school at 8.55am on Wednesday, January 6th. Your sincerely, Paul Keogh CIC Principal Topic: Realising our Potential Master Plan Update - Meeting for Parents/Guardians Time: Dec 7, 2020 07:00 PM Dublin Join Zoom Meetingus02web.zoom.us/j/84093281065?pwd=L0lqTWs3WSsrWmFWRGJ6bkNmdWc1QT09 Meeting ID: 840 9328 1065 Passcode: w2j34L

Realising our Potential Master Plan Update - Monday December 7th, 7.00pm

Dear Parent/Guardian, Throughout the pandemic, the students have continued to be co-operative, patient and good spirited. Starting with the on-line learning in March through to our rigorous sanitisation system now, they have been a great credit to you. I am very proud of them and their behaviour. As I am sure you are. On a daily basis, Summerhill wishes to instil confidence and ambition in the students. We hope the School’s new strategic plan, entitled Realising Our Potential, captures that commitment. By extension, the students, teachers and staff deserve the best learning and teaching facilities to help them reach their full possibilities. Please join me on Monday December 7th 2020 at 7:00pm for a virtual presentation on Summerhill’s masterplan. Incorporating three key elements of school life – our learning environment; science and technology; and physical and psychological well-being – Summerhill urgently needs more and better physical space – for the students to gather, grow, learn and interact with each other. I look forward to seeing you then. Click on the link below to join the meeting. Thank you for your ongoing support.
