Another Win For Sem Rannafast Team
St. Macartan’s made it “two wins from two” in the Rannafast Cup when they recorded a win against a fancied St. Pius Magherafelt team on Thursday last. This win all but guarantees The Sem a place in the quarter-final of the competition. This is not an achievement that should be taken lightly as this is the first time that this group of Sem players have made the quarter-final stages having missed out at Dalton, Corn na nÓg and Brock level. The fact that it should also come at the expense of St. Pius is also significant as this St. Pius team contested last year’s Brock Cup final. It is a great sign of the improvement that these players have made it through the coaching that they received at club, school and county level over the last 12 months.
The game itself was played on the superbly kept grounds of Maghery, Sean McDermotts in Armagh. Although there was slight dew on the ground, the conditions were perfect for football and the Sem lads took full advantage of this from the thrown in. Although St. Pius registered two early scores, the Sem were level by the 5th minute through points from Paudie Meehan and Robbie McAlister. However, once McAlister rattled the net in the 8th minute, the Sem didn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. A most impressive facet of the Sem’s performance was the ability to respond any time that St. Pius looked like they were getting a foothold on the game.
Overall, it was a very impressive team performance. In goals, Emyvale’s Eoghan Treanor’s kickouts continue to improve whilst he also made a vital penalty save in the 2nd half when the game was in the melting pot. Despite the concession of a couple of soft goals, the defense was generally solid with Jamie Shields and Ryan O’Toole particularly good. Gavin McPhillips and Sean Treanor once again emptied the tanks in midfield, with Treanor’s kick-passing catching the eye. Up front, there is still room for improvement but when the ball was moved fast, our forwards always looked dangerous. Oisin McKenna impressed once again whilst Cillian Woods bagged himself two goals as he settles into school’s football and grows in confidence.
The Sem’s last group game is against St. Mary’s Magherafelt. The winning team will top the group and earn a more favourable draw in the 2nd half of the competition. The St. Mary’s team is generally regarded as the 2nd best team in the competition. They have made the semi-final or final in each competition as this team has progressed through the ranks. In each of those semi-finals and finals, they lost to St. Pat’s Maghera. In fact, the same Maghera team has never been beaten at any level. St. Mary’s are also in a position to call on 10 of the players from the starting team that were defeated by the Sem in last year’s Rannafast Cup final. That said, it marks a wonderful opportunity for the Sem boys to test themselves against one of the best teams in the competition.

St. Macartan’s Rannafast Cup campaign off to winning start
St. Macartan’s College began the defense of their Rannafast Cup title in impressive fashion with a win over St. Mary’s College, Belfast on September 17th. The game was played in near perfect conditions in Sherry’s Field, Armagh. Although “The Sem” are the current holders of the Rannafast Cup, the current squad boasts only three players from the team that played in last year’s final. However, this group of players claimed silverware of their own last year when they won the Brock Shield back in May.
During last year’s Brock Cup competition, The Sem were beaten convincingly by this same St. Marys team - so this was always going to be a difficult opening fixture. However, from the minute the ball was thrown in, the Sem boys displayed the wonderful progress that they have made over the Summer playing with their clubs.
A strong defensive performance in the first half, after playing against the wind, put the Sem 1-7 to 0-3 in the lead at the break. The highlight of the first half was the performance of Oisin McKenna who was making his competitive debut for the Sem. The Sean McDermott’s player registered three points from play in the opening half and added another point to this tally in the second half. Indeed McKenna wasn’t the only debutant to make a positive impression on the match as Scotstown’s Dylan McCarey also showed up very well, despite playing out of position at corner back.
Credit must go to the St. Mary’s team who battled gamely in the second half despite the concession of an early goal. However, a very controlled performance by the Sem saw them see the game out comfortably. Aside from the result of the match, another positive outcome for the Sem was the performance of the substitutes when introduced. In particular, Truagh’s Cillian Woods caught the eye in scoring three points from play despite taking to the field with only ten minutes remaining.
The next fixture for the Sem is against St. Mary’s, Magherafelt.

Leaving Cert Results Celebrations at St. Macartan's College.
The members of what was regarded as one of the best Leaving Cert groups in the school in recent times lived up to expectations on results day last Wednesday. Almost every member of the class of 2015 was individually met and presented with their results by St. Macartan's College deputy principal, Ms. Marion McDonald and the principal Mr. Raymond McHugh on results day. Consensus at school level was that the vast majority of the group would be in a position to progress to university to pursue their studies in their respective chosen areas. This was confirmed to school management on Thursday last when the class of 2015 met again for their Debs dance which took place in the Westenra Hotel. The general celebratory atmosphere was added to by another significant cause for celebration namely the CAO offers which were issued to students on the previous Monday. Addressing the students at the Debs, St. Macartan's principal Raymond McHugh congratulated the students on their outstanding achievements and before wishing them well at college, he thanked them for everything they brought to the school during their time as Sem students. Top Leaving Cert student at St. Macartan's College in 2015 was Josh Taylor who achieved 610 points. Josh is from Monaghan town and is also a past pupil of St. Mary's BNS Monaghan. Josh will progress to Trinity College Dublin as an Entrance Scholar where he will study Nano Science. Josh's family is justifiably very proud of his excellent achievement.
