Tess Scully from third year wrote a very moving poem that has inspired numerous students throughout Sion Hill this Christmas. Below is the poem which Tess read out to the entire school at our annual Coin Race to raise awareness.
Listen, people I've a statement to make
Not only a country, a world is at stake
And I know that we're not doing anything wrong
But that doesn't mean we're not helping the process along
So why am I up here? What the hell am I getting at?
Life is unfair and I'm not ok with that
Our world is unjust, humanity's dying
And not just from poverty but from our lack of trying
Now no one expects you to give up all you own
But people are dying while we sit at home
It's not hard to do, believe me it's been done
Don't sit and watch the race, get up and run
We can Walk, jog, dance our way through,
We can give anything, in any way we choose.
Give a euro a week, a month, a day
We are not limited in any sort of way
Give to a charity that you deem worthy
Compared to half the population, our life's a doss, it's sturdy
Especially at Christmas I don't understand
How some can sit at home with gifts in their hands
Give to their friends, to family that's extends for miles
When children are born into starvation in tones, in piles
Give one gift away to a needier cause
Not to someone looking for a new remote so their TV can pause
Some walk for miles and get water from wells
While others put their Louis Vitton baggage on Ikea shelves
So we sit here and complain about the state of society
While we also complain about our own life's variety
Crisis upon crisis, poverty war
Sectarianism, global warming, sexism, more
Let's talk about what's on the news as its such a disgrace
A disgrace solely caused by our own human race.
We're killing our planet, we kill each other
How do we expect this world to recover
How de we sit at home and complain about life?
And then go out but still have pride in our strife
We all have a voice perhaps a penny to spare
Something to save our planet from despair
You are rich or you're poor there's little in between
But this could all change if a few were more keen
Think of what we could do just a person at a time
Whether it's donating money or speaking out in rhyme
Save the animals, the people that belong to this planet
And if you have a passion don't let people damn it
So tell me this Christmas what are you going to do?
Me? I'm going to do my part too
So I openly beg you, I beg of you please
Give something this Christmas to your world in need
I initially wrote this piece just to speak to my class about a topic that I am so passionate about. I feel so incredibly strong about the issues mentioned and consciously make an effort to help as much as I can. I just thought if I could possibly reach out to a few people that would be great because I am such a strong believer of the concept of people giving in small amounts that would make a massive difference, if everyone just gave a small amount so many lives could be saved. I really wanted to bring awareness to a few global issues because especially at Christmas time some people tend to forget. As it turned out I ended up giving my speech to whole school and was able to share my views on a larger scale and it was the most incredible feeling and I hope I reached out to a few more people - Tes

On the 21st of November, three gold invited ex governor of Mount Joy, John Longergan to come to the school and give a talk on the prison system in Ireland. We all found the talk extremely interesting and informative as John informed us of statistics such as only 3% of Irish prisoners are females, or that women may give birth to their babies and raise them in the prison for up to two years. He also told us about the history of Mountjoy itself and the female prison 'The Dóchas centre'. We were very grateful to John for taking time to talk to us.
