Congratulations to the U16 girls basketball team who today competed in the Regional Semi-final on home grounds. The girls took on a strong sided team, Falcarragh of Donegal. The girls were nervous as the game started but soon settled into it after the first few scores. It was always a close contest however the Colaiste Muire girls showed their true fighting spirit and never gave up to the very end. Ms O' Malley is so proud of the girls and their achievements. A few weeks to the final will see Ms O'Malley and the girls work hard and hopefully continue on their winning streak taking home the silverware for the second year in a row. Well done to all eighteen girls on the panel for their super achievement!
Enniscrone 4 - 4 Colaiste Muire, Ballymote (28.11.2024)
The old cliche (game of two halves) rang true today in hardy conditions as the wind played havoc for both teams.
We won the toss and decided to play with the twelfth man (wind) in the frist half. The lads started brightly stringing lovely passages of play together in the middle of the park. 10 mins in CMBM took the lead through a great strike from 20 yards out by Jack Ivers-Brehony. The wind had Enniscrone barracked on the edge of their box and through a corner Fergal McDonald got his head to a cross to leave it 2-0 with 20mins played. Two mins later Leon Warren made it 3-0 from a mix up in the box by Enniscrone. Jack got his second and our final goal by a poor clearnece by the kepper 4-0. However, the last kick of the half was a penalty for Enniscrone and their number 10 rattled the top corner to leave it 4-1 at half time.
The wind seemed to pick up more in the second half so our lads knew they had to dig deep to get a result against a good Enniscrone side. Our lads parked the bus for the first five minutes and did well, but Enniscrone got their second through a shot at the edge of the box 4-2. The lads battled hard with the wind and the rain but enniscrone pressed hard and got their third from a smart finish by their number 10. With the minimum in it we missed two great chances via Sean Scanlon & Jack Ivers-Brehony as both shots were saved by the keeper. Then with two mins to go, enniscrone got their second penalty which they scored to leave it 4-4.
A great game by both teams but the lads will need a few days to thaw out after a brutally cold encounter.
On Monday 25th the U19 girls basketball team took to the floor again this year. The girls had a strong start making the first basket of the game. Unfortunately the strong sided Crana College were never too far behind. Coláiste Muire were chasing the game by two points at the end of the first half. It wasn't to be for Coláiste Muire as so many baskets rolled around the ring and back out. The girls fought to the end and never gave up, putting on a fighting display as always. This was the first time Coláiste Muire has made an U19 Regional semi-final and the girls have alot to be proud of. Ms O' Malley has high hopes for this team next year. Well done to all involved.
On Monday 18th of November the U16 Basketball girls travelled into the Mercy College to take on their U16 side. The girls were missing a couple of players on the day however the girls once again put on an excellent display of basketball. This team are unbeaten since they first started back in Septmeber 2023. The girls dedication is to be admired and everyone of them conrtibute so much to the team. They will now face Falcarragh from Donegal on Decmeber 3rd with home advantage behind them after topping the group in the league stages. Exciting times ahead for both U16 & U19 girls basketball teams reaching semi-final stage. Well done to all involved.
Our lads were in action in their second fixture of the Connacht FAI cup this afternoon (13.11.2024). It was a convincing display by our lads from start to finsh with four players getting on the scoresheet.
The game started with our lads dominating possesion but couldn't find their shooting boots early on. However, with sustained possesion James Lavin put Paddy Muldoon through on goal with a lovely pass and the keeper took down Paddy down inside the box for a penaltly - James Lavin slotted home 1-0. From there the lads never looked back and from a corner Conor Dwyer headed home to make it 2-0 at Half time.
The second half was more of the same, fanstsic football in the middle of the park by James Lavin and Colin Finn put Cian Deveney through on goal and he dispatched with confidence 3-0. Belmullet pulled one back from a good cross to leave it 3-1, Aodhan Hannon didn't get his much desired clean sheet! The last two goals came from the boots of James Lavin & Josh Mc Hugh two wonderfully hit free kicks that nestled in the top corner.
A great footballing display by the lads to overcome their loss in the first game. They are due to play their third game V Foxford in a few weeks time.
Both the U19 and U16 girls basketball teams were away in Castlerea on Monday 11th November to take on Elphin and Drumshambo in their North West Regionals games. With three very close games and nail biting finishes the girls were delighted to keep their undefeated title and progress to the next round. The U19 girls have now progressed to the Regional Semi final taking on a strong sided Donegal team. This team is one to watch as they progress with some wonderful performances to date. We wish the U16 girls the best of luck in their last league game next week and fingers crossed for our U19 girls with their upcoming semi final. Well done to all involved.
Well done to our students who represented the school at the recent Annual Youth Conference in the Radisson Hotel Sligo. Students from schools across Sligo had an opportunity to discuss issues relating to young people. There were represenatives from the Sligo County Council who listened, supported and encouraged advocacy and change. It was a very enjoyable, educational day helping to build connections with young people across the county.
On Tuesday last the U16 & U19 girls travelled to Coláiste Iascaigh to play the second round of their basketball league matches. Both teams had a slow start to the game however in the second half the cobwebs were blown off and they came out in style taking a lead which couldn't be caught. The girls were absolutely thrilled with their performaces and are excited to take on Drumshambo and Elphin in the next round after midterm break. Well done to all involved and for their continued commitment to after school training. The hard work is paying off.
On Monday last the Senior girls Gaelic team took to their home pitch where they took on Grange in the last round of the league. The girls most certainly brought their A game with a final scoreline of 1-10 to 0-3. It was a fantastic performance from all the girls considering we were missing a couple of our senior students whom would most certainly have made an impact if available to play (Alex Browne absent from picture). It was an emotional game for our 6th year students as this may have been the final time for the girls togging out in the blue and white representing Coláiste Muire in GAA. It has been a number of years since we have had such a high number of our senior cycle girls particpate in Gaelic. Leading by example both on and off the pitch, so well done ladies and thank you for your contribution to the girls GAA over the last number of years.
Ballymote 0 - 0 Ballinode College
Our u15's boys soccer had their first outing of the year against Ballinode College in the Connacht FAI league on Thursday 17th October.
Although the scoreline would suggest the game was not a classic that was not the case for spectators on the day. From start to finish both teams played a lovely brand of football creating some great passages of play & chances on goal. Ballinode had some early oppurtunites on goal but Paddy Looby between the sticks made some great saves to keep the game level. We had our own chances through Jack Ivers-Brehony & Brooklyn Cannon on the stroke of half-time but the Ballinode netminder was in flying form too.
We started the second half on the front foot and had the better of the chances and should have been two nil up but once again the ballinode keeper was there when called upon. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams passing the ball well which was pleasing on the eye. However, in injury time the best chance of the game came from some great indivdual work by Fergal McDonald to take on three defenders but his shot just went wide of the post.
The two teams were very evenly matched in a very competitive and honest game of football. Next up for this young exciting team will be a game against Moyne College of Ballina after mid-term.
