Proclamation Day at BCS

Well done to everyone who contributed to a very successful Schools Proclamation Day today. The students attended a display in the Hall of memorabilia/images from the time and watched a video based on The Easter Rising of 1916. At midday we all attended the outdoor activities which involved the planting of a Dove Tree, the burying of a time capsule of things important to students of BCS, the Flag Raising Ceremony and the Reading of The Proclamation and the reading of our New Proclamation drawn up by the students for Ireland 100 years on.
The DOVE TREE – Handkerchief Tree
This tree commemorates those who gave their lives for Ireland. A hundred years ago, they did so mainly on the streets of Dublin and in the yard at Kilmainham Gaol. We also remember that many gave their lives, for another version of Irish freedom, in the trenches of France, Belgium and at Galipoli. Many also died during the War of Independence and Civil War, as did many innocent bystanders in Croke Park and elsewhere. Further back, many were killed at Vinegar Hill, Benburb and Kinsale too.
All wanted to establish an Irish identity and an independence which we must never take for granted. Later in the 20th and 21st centuries, still more served and died for Ireland and the United Nations in more distant places still, like Lebanon, the Congo and Somalia, trying to help people elsewhere to achieve the freedom that we now, perhaps, sometimes take for granted.
It is not for us to decide who deserves to be commemorated more than another. We can, however, express the sincere hope that none of the students of this school will ever have to die for Ireland. We ask you all to live for Ireland, and for your communities, to do your very best to make this a better country, a nation where we tolerate nothing but honesty and commitment to a better society; where we accept and welcome difference and diversity; where we do our utmost to ensure that all the children of our nation are cherished with equal fervour, just as Connolly and the rest would have wanted in 1916.
