St. Macartan’s College 2-08 Holy Trinity College Cookstown 0-08 The Sem made their maiden voyage into this years MacRory cup campaign with a very hard fought victory in Dunmoyle (Errigal Ciarán) last Tuesday. Holy Trinity were coming into this game with an impressive opening day victory over a fancied St. Pat’s Cavan side. Although the Sem opened the scoring, Holy Trinity soon got into their groove racing into a 5-1 lead. They were slicker in possession and tancious in the tackle and the Sem struggled to cope with them at times. It was evident in the early stages that having played a game already was standing to the Cookstown men. The Sems chances weren’t aided by the fact they lost the influential James Clerkin and Chrissy Flood to black cards inside the opening 20 minutes. However, the Sem steadied the ship and with some scores from the impressive Conor McCooey (0.2) and Mattie Maguire (0.1) before the break they cut Holy Trinity’s lead to one (0.5 - 0.4.). Indeed they may have had their noses in front had a a 20th minute penalty not unfortunately rebounded off the crossbar. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Holy Trinity outscoring their opponents 0.3 to 0.1 after 20 minutes before McCooey again popped up with a second score of the half for the Monaghan men. With 5 minutes left on the clock the Tyrone school lead 0.8 - 0.6, however the final minutes would see the Monaghan side hit a timely purple patch and secure a victory with the tide turning completely. The Sem hit 2.2 with no reply in this period which also saw over 6 minutes of injury time played. The introduction of Conor McCrystal and Gary Mohan up front gave a different kind of threat which Holy Trinity struggled to cope with. Mohan won a penalty that was expertly dispatched by Lochlainn Power who really came to the fore during this key period where he also set up his Monaghan Harps club mate Conor McCrystal for the Sems second goal moments later. These goals would sink Holy Trinity’s challenge. They fought back late on but Sem goalkeeper David Brennan was in no mood to let anything past him as he impressively saved a number of one on ones late in the second half. It was a hard working performance by the Sem and this result really opens up the group. St. Macartan’s will play St. Pat’s Cavan next and finally St. Pat’s Maghera in what is a very competitive group. Team: D. Brennan (Clontibret) J. Clerkin (Seans) R. Boyle (Truagh) E. 1st Year League 2018 Division 1 Final: Tyrone 7 v 6 Kerry It is very often the case in sport that the games that are built up the most are those that inevitably disappoint. Following yesterday’s thrilling DIvision 3 final, expectations were high that the Division 1 final was going to be a game not to be missed. Thankfully, those expectations came through and all those in attendance were treated to a classic of a game that was decided by the very last kick of the game. When Kerry scored straight from the throw-in through Oisin Hagan, it was clear that Tyrone were going to need to be at their best to able compete with the competition’s in-form side. Tyrone responded immediately through the impressive Sean Og McElwain and soon after they took the lead through fellow Scotstown man Bryan Caulfield. David Duffy brought the sides level from a long-range free kick but it was Tyrone who finished the half strongest and points from Henry Kelly and Nathan Brennan gave the Red Hands a two point cushion at the break. Whatever words that Mr Reilly and Mr O Connor said to their young Kerry men at half time certainly had the desired effect as they played like men possessed following the interval. Played at an extraordinary pace, the 2nd half was end-to-end action straight from the throw-in. The sides exchanged scores with Oisin Hagan and Adam Monahan pointing for Kerry and Henry Kelly and Bryan Caulfield scoring for Tyrone. With 3 minutes remaining, there was still 2 points between the teams and it looked like the defensive efforts of Jason Boylan and Ronan O Reilly were going to be enough to see Tyrone over the line. Adam Monahan cut the gap to the minimum with an inspirational score. With just 1 minute remaining the sides were level when Oisin Hagan turned Tyrone defense over and was dragged down. Hagan pointed the free himself. Kerry then almost took the lead but an outstanding moment of goalkeeping by Conor Meehan (which earned the play of the day) denied Adam Monahan. With time-up, the game was then played out on a ‘next score wins’ basis. But cometh-the-hour, cometh-the-man - and that man was Nathan Brennan. Brennan was found with a beautiful crossfield pass by his Clontibret clubmate Henry Kelly and he split the posts with a strike that Conor McManus himself would have been proud of! Following the final whistle the Division 1 League Cup was presented to Tyrone captain Henry Kelly by Rannafast Cup player Michael Hamill. Scorers Tyrone: Henry Kelly (2) Bryan Caulfield (2), Nathan Brennan (2) Sean Og Mc Elwain (1) Kerry: Oisin Hagan (3), Adam Monahan (2), David Duffy (1) Teams Tyrone: Sean Og McElwain, Jason Boylan, Bryan Caulfield (Scotstown), Daithi Brennan (Sean McDermotts), Henry Kelly, Nathan Brennan (Clontibret), Oisin McGeown (Monaghan Harps), Aodhan Boylan (Eire Og), Johnnie Wright (Emyvale), Conor Meehan, Ronan O Reilly (Truagh) Kerry: Daire Conlon, Fergal Magee(Monaghan Harps), James Brady, Jimmy McKenna, Adam Monahan (Scotstown), Caolan Feely, Oisin Hagan (Truagh), David Duffy, Darragh Mulligan (Emyvale), Oisin McPhillips (Sean McDermotts), Nathan McAree (Eire Og) Edward O Hara (Roslea)
