St. Macartan's College students and teachers gathered this morning to celebrate the school as a community past and present. A prayer service prepared by the R.E. Department, music teacher Ms. Mulhern, the school choir and led by the school's prefects and Year Heads followed an introduction by the principal Mr. McHugh. Before calling on Head Prefect Conor Caulfield to lead the school in prayer, Mr. McHugh spoke about the school as a community in itself and its place as an integral part of the local community and beyond. He reminded the school that that almost to the day some 170 years ago in September 1848 ago, Philip Connolly from Tydavnet became the first student at St. Macartan's College. Continuing, the principal welcomed this year's new students who follow in Philip Connolly's footsteps and in the footsteps of thousands of other former Sem boys. He also welcomed the new teachers to the school.. This year's cohort of new teachers is the largest ever to join the school at one time. Referring to symbols previously brought forward, the Junior School Year Heads spoke about new beginnings, friendship and settling into the Sem Community, securing roots, securing friendships and preparing for what the future has in store. The reflection for Transition Year was on the opportunities available to participate in a different way in school life during T.Y., to help the community, to grow and to mature as individuals. The Senior School reflection was on leadership and planning for the future. Bidding prayers were offered for those who are new to the school, that they may all feel welcomed and a sense of belonging, for the school community past and present, for the sick and those in turmoil especially for those members of the Sem community who are struggling at this time to accept a sudden death in the family or amongst friends.
