The English Department
is pleased to announce details of a 2020 Writing Competition, a unique opportunity for students with an interest in creative writing.
Title:
‘Life in 2020’
Entry and Submission Guidelines:
Students should submit one piece of work exploring ‘Life in 2020’ in line with the following guidelines:
The piece of creative writing may be of any genre
(eg. Short Story, Descriptive, Feature article, Memoir, Personal Essay )
Juniors (1st,2nd,3rd Years): 1,500 - 2,000 words in length
Seniors (4th, 5th, 6th Years): 2,500 - 3,000 words in length
All submissions should be typed in Times New Roman, font size 12 and double spaced.
Your submission should be sent as a .pdf file to e nglish@sionhillcollege.ie by Friday, November 6th at 5pm. No submissions will be accepted past this deadline.
The prize:
A prize of a €100 One4All voucher will be presented to a Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle winner. In addition, the winners’ pieces will be shared with the entire school community.

Beth Sweeney - Naughton Scholar 2020

Warm congratulations from all of us as Sion Hill to Beth Sweeney (Head Girl, Class of 2020) who has been announced as one of the 2020 Naughton Scholarship winners. The Naughton Scholarship program rewards students for their accomplishments to date and encourages and supports them through their undergraduate studies in science, technology, engineering and maths. Beth is currently studying for a Physics degree in UCD and we wish her every success for her future.

On Friday afternoon the school leaders for 2020/21 were officially announced by the 6th years. We congratulate our Head Girl Palakshi, Deputy Head Girls Lara and Rachel and all the prefects, student council members and committee members. To celebrate, the 6th years organised a socially distanced, Halloween themed quiz for the whole school. Congratulations to 4 Amber on their victory. A great afternoon was had by all and we thank our 6th years for their dedication and enthusiasm.

TY's took part in a morning of Urban Orienteering on Wednesday 14th October. It was a cold but bright morning and all the girls completed a course that included Blackrock Park, the Rock Road to Booterstown, Booterstown Avenue, Mount Merrion Avenue, Cross Avenue and the surrounding side roads. Well done to all, especially The GBH"s who won, scoring a maximum 14 points.

Congratulations to Fiorella Pollak who was the winner of the Space Week Competition organised by the Science Department. To celebrate, a bag of space themed goodies was presented to Fiorella by Head Girl, Palakshi Rattan.

Message of Hope at Opening Mass

The Sion Hill Community gathered today using Google Meet for our Opening School Mass. The theme was hope and optimism. Special thanks to Fr Peter O'Kane for celebrating this important event in our school year and to our religion and music departments, talented musicians, singers and readers for their valued contributions.
Sr Margaret MacCurtain O.P. (Benvenuta) RIP

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Sr Margaret MacCurtain O.P (Benvenuta) today. Margaret McCurtain joined the teaching staff of Dominican College Sion Hill in 1953 before a distinguished career in the History Department at UCD from 1964 - 1994.
Historian, Diarmuid Ferriter paid tribute to Margaret on her 90th birthday last year.
