Senator Fiona O'Loughlin (from Newbridge) has shared information about the intended work of the Oireachtas Education Committee on Leaving Certificate Reform. If you want to share your opinions and ideas on this topic, the details are outlined below. "I am pleased that we have agreed to prioritise the issue of Leaving Certificate Reform as a key area for consideration at the Oireachtas Education Committee. In order to ensure that the voice of the entire education community in South Kildare is heard, I would ask that you share the below survey monkey with your students and staff. As this is just in a short format to capture views, I have no doubt that your teachers and students have much more to contribute, therefore I would be more than happy to receive further communication by email or phone. I will also be hosting a virtual public meeting at 7:30pm on November the 18th, and I would really appreciate if you, your staff and your students would engage with event. All details are available on my Facebook page which I have linked below (Survey link is in the description). PUBLIC MEETING: Leaving Cert Reform | Facebook www.surveymonkey.com/r/8GHQJJZ The covid pandemic has fundamentally changed how we view the Leaving Certificate examination and we were forced to adopt measures that we would never have thought possible a few months prior. It is vital that we now take stock of both curriculum and examination.  I want to  ensure that the lived experience, from both the  students and teachers perspective is clearly heard within our work on the Education Committee. Anyone who wishes to attend the meeting can email me at fiona.oloughlin@oireachtas.ie Rgds, Fiona O'Loughlin"

Yesterday our Fifth Years enjoyed a Reflection Day with their Religion teachers on the theme of 'Thanks Giving'. Students first prayed and meditated on all they were thankful for in their life. They then brought this grateful intention with them as they went on a reflective walk in the Liffey Linear Park, with students even picking up a few hot beverages along the way ☕

The Under 15 soccer team travelled to Laytown today to play Colaiste an hInse in their first match of the season. After a slow start HFSS found themselves 3-0 down after 10 minutes. By half time the score was 4-2 as the girls began to take control of the game. After going 5-2 down with 15 minutes remaining the girls dug deep to draw 5-5 with a last minute equaliser from Jessica McNulty. Our girls dominated both periods of extra time and found the deserving winner after a Laura Jane Kaye free kick caused confusion in the penalty area with the ball somehow making the ball over the goal line. Scorers: Ella Donellan (2) Tara Christie (2) Laura Jane Kaye and Jessica McNulty

Children First Awareness Week: 1st-7th November 2021 Information Note from the Department of Education Children First Awareness Week is taking place from 1st to 7th November 2021. Children First promotes the protection of children from abuse and neglect, by setting out what individuals and organisations need to do to keep children safe, and how to deal with concerns about a child’s safety or welfare. Society has a duty of care towards children, and everyone should be alert to the possibility that children they are in contact with may be abused or at risk of abuse or neglect. Organisations, such as Holy Family Secondary School, classed as providers of relevant services under the Children First Act 2015, are required to complete a risk assessment and must have a Child Safeguarding Statement in place. Under the Children First Act 2015, certain people who work with children have additional legal obligations. These are known as Mandated Persons. Mandated Persons, are obliged to report to TUSLA social work department any knowledge, belief, or reasonable suspicion that a child has been harmed, is being harmed or is at risk of being harmed. The Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post-primary Schools 2017 give clear direction and guidance to school management and school personnel in relation to meeting the statutory obligations under the Children First Act, 2015 and in the continued implementation within the school setting of the best practice guidance set out in the updated Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children. www.tusla.ie/children-first/children-first-guidance-and-legislation/ The Department of Education Inspectorate visited Holy Family Secondary School on 14th October 2021. The school was inspected for COVID 19 school safety measures compliance and for Child Safeguarding measures. Our school was determined by the Inspectorate to be fully and wholly compliant with all required measures. This is a welcome affirmation from the Department of Education to all staff, students and all in our school community for doing their utmost to comply with safety measures. Holy Family Secondary School staff continue to strive daily to do their utmost to ensure a safe and affirming school environment. The Board of Management wish to express its most sincere gratitude and appreciation to the continued excellent work of a dedicated school staff. All HFSS compliance documents and policies are openly available for all to access on our school website; www.holyfamily.ie/policy-2/

A range of activities took place in the school during the week from Maths Relays for 1st and 2nd Years to the annual TY Orienteering, 5th Year Bingo and Daily Countdown Challenge to promote the subject and its uses outside of the classroom. Maths is essential for disciplines such as science, technology, engineering and finance.
