President Higgins - Message for our young people
Created : 23 Mar 2020, 6:41 PM
Archived : 23 May 2020, 12:00 AM
Following his consideration and signing of the Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest) Bill 2020, President Michael D. Higgins has released the following statement: “As President, I am urging all citizens, given the emergency of our situation in relation to the grave challenge to our public health, to respond in a generous way to the Health Service Executive’s advice on measures to alleviate the spread of Covid19. These new health and social measures may be difficult for many but they affect us all and we are at a point now when a person’s actions have consequences not only for themselves but for all in society. Irresponsible individual action puts all at risk. We must draw on our strengths now. Intergenerational solidarity has been one of the greatest resources of contemporary Irish society. Future generations, it is my belief, will look back at this critical time and I hope that they will be proud of how we as a society rose to the challenges together, with different generations taking account of one another. As President, I have such appreciation for, and deeply value the connection I have experienced with, young people around the country. I appeal to these young people to spread the word among their friends of the importance of that which we have been asked to do. In every generation there will be exceptions to what is being sought in the public interest. Let us hope that we have seen the end of such behaviour which puts all of us at risk. Many of the older people, of whose generation Sabina and I are a part, and to whom I have spoken, have been very appreciative of the large numbers of young people who are helping them, and that such assistance is offered in such a caring way that addresses issues of our older citizens that go far beyond the delivery of necessary groceries or food. Those older people who have been helped have felt a connection within society, a sense of a bond that is being strengthened rather than weakened. Older people as well as being grateful for how they have been helped have spoken of how they have welcomed the sight of young people who have given them such hope for the Ireland that is to come.”

Covid 19 - A message for students & families

Dear Students and Families, “It is not what happens, but how you react to it that matters” This has been an extremely tough time for you and the unknown element makes it all the more difficult. While no one has a magic wand there are things that we all can do to make things better. I have spoken to you many times about leadership and the importance of standing up and being counted, about the need to be self-motivated and accountable. Never has it mattered more than in the present climate. It is how we collectively respond that will make all the difference. You can do this by keeping a structure and routine in your daily life. It won’t be easy but you know you are all doing it together for a greater purpose. Get up each morning and follow your school timetable to the best of your ability (teachers will be posting work regularly to help you) Take regular short breaks and continue to exercise, which is essential for your physical and mental wellbeing. This is not holiday time so it must be treated differently. I appreciate that complacency and boredom can overcome all of us at times and you may feel a need to meet up with your friends but again it’s essential that you follow the advice re social distancing. You are healthy young men and feel invincible but many in your homes or neighbourhoods are not so lucky. Please do what is asked of you in order to help them. Gentlemen, I look forward to meeting up with you all in the not too distant future to compliment and thank you for the wonderful effort you have all put in to beating this unprecedented situation/virus and allowing us all get back to enjoying a full free life. I appreciate you might feel a little overwhelmed at times and if you do please speak and support each other through phone and social media (I didn’t think I would be encouraging that!!) On that issue also please rely on information coming from reputable sources and not the nonsense that can come from certain groups on social media. Ann Marie Johnson our school counsellor has kindly offered her time from 11am to 1pm Monday to Friday if any of you feel the need to speak with her. You can contact her on 0851404264. Stay safe and please God we will be looking back on this period sooner rather than later. Best wishes, Ben Travers
Department of Education Update re: Oral & Practical Exams
Created : 19 Mar 2020, 11:49 AM
Archived : 19 May 2020, 12:00 AM
Staff, Parents & Students, We hope that both you and your families are keeping well during these uncertain times. Please see message below from the Department of Education this morning. We will continue to communicate any information that comes in from the Department via the school app over the coming weeks. Kind regards, Ben Travers "Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD has today (Thursday 19 March 2020) announced the cancellation of oral and practical performance tests of the state examinations which were originally scheduled to take place from Monday 23 March to Friday 3 April 2020. All students who were due to take these tests will be awarded full marks for this portion of the exam. The decision was taken in light of the closure of schools as a result of the Covid-19 virus and it will be implemented by the State Examinations Commission (SEC). Minister McHugh said: “This is a difficult time for all. Students are facing a challenging period out of school and our decision on this element of the exams is being taken with their best interests at heart. “It is the fairest response we could take in the circumstances. It guarantees that no student will score less than they would have if schools had been operating as normal. “We have seen a new emphasis on remote learning amid the uncertainty about the impact of Covid-19 and the closure of all schools. I hope this decision will ease some of the pressure that students are feeling and allow them to focus more clearly on completing project work and preparing for written exams.” The change to the 2020 state examinations means all students who were due to take oral and practical performance tests in the following subjects will be given full marks for this part of the examination: Oral tests in Leaving Certificate Irish and the Modern Languages of French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese. Practical performance tests in Leaving Certificate Music. Practical performance tests in Junior Certificate Music and Home Economics. Minister McHugh also confirmed changes to deadlines for students to complete project work and coursework in a number of subjects. Students were originally scheduled to complete these elements of the state examinations on a number of dates from Friday 20 March to Friday 24 April 2020, depending on the subject. Students will now be given until Friday 15 May 2020 to complete this work.

I hope you are all keeping well and looking after yourselves and those around you during these testing times. As transition years students you don’t have the burden of normal academic pressure so hopefully you are being supportive to your families. I hope each of you are taking on board the advice of staying indoors where possible. Use the time wisely, help with something at home, up-skill yourself or practice a hobby. Hopefully the many TY events planned for you can be rescheduled. As things stand we will have to wait and see how events will turn out and I will keep you updated. We will continue to plan for your portfolio assessment at the end of the year. You will be expected to present a collection of projects and showcase the use of your time during transition year. Use this time now to plan, gather and prepare. For many students I never received your work experience projects. I am asking that those outstanding projects can be submitted to me in digital form. Students will also be requested to complete an additional personal interest project during their time out of school. This project will also form part of your parents evening presentation and can be used for your portfolio assessment. In order for you to submit this work and to allow for better communication I have set up a Google Classroom for each TY class. All relevant information for these projects can be found there. Each student is to sign into this Google class using their school email account only. External accounts will not be able to join. If you have forgotten the password to your school account email me and I can reset it. The class codes are as follows: 4A – aqtt26g 4B – bjwa4bo 4C – akittgc 4D – qktdlj3 4E – uyfeyrq 4F – f7vc5cz I can be contacted via email at sc@naascbs.ie The effort you put in won’t go unnoticed. Regards and stay safe, S.Coy

Statement from the Department of Education and Skills on school closures
Created : 12 Mar 2020, 1:54 PM
Archived : 12 May 2020, 12:00 AM
An announcement was made this morning by the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD of the closure of schools, pre-schools and further and higher education settings, for a period until 29 March 2020, to support efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19. This will take effect from 6pm this evening, Thursday 12 March. This is in line with the advice of the National Public Health Emergency Team. All pupils and students, from pre-school to third level are urged to practice social distancing, and to minimise physical contact with each other, to help avoid the spread of Covid-19. This should include minimising social contact, avoiding meeting up and keeping physical space between them. Parents and guardians are urged to support their children to maintain this approach. In order to minimise the impact on teaching and learning, all schools will be asked to continue to plan lessons and, where possible, provide online resources for students or online lessons where schools are equipped to do so. Schools are asked to be conscious of students that may not have access to online facilities and to consider this actively in their response. Schools are asked to prioritise supporting exam classes to continue to prepare for State examinations.
