TY’s just keep going from one action packed week to another!
This Monday TY’s had their final set of module rotations in Business, Irish and Personal Development. At this stage they will all have had tasters in all the Leaving Certificate Subjects. They will also have studied Drivers Education, Leadership, Mindfulness, and Politics and Society. They also had the opportunity to participate in a new TY Maths CLASS - Developing Leaving Certificate Mathematical Thinking. It is an opportunity for students to focus on helping bridge the gap between junior cycle and leaving cert maths. In particular, the aim is to improve students' geometric and trigonometric reasoning skills. The rationale to these classes is to bring a broader deeper understanding to leaving certificate Mathematics. These classes are of great benefit to all students as they transition into 5th year and Leaving Certificate.
TY3’s heading off to Fighting Words on Tuesday. Fighting Words is a creative writing workshop that encourages dialogue between classmates. It also proved to be a worthwhile bonding exercise for the TY’s.
Active* Consent workshop took place this Wednesday. The programme supports young people to have positive and confident sexual health and wellbeing through Active* Consent.
All TY’s participated in Development Day 5 this Thursday. TY3 and 4 took part in the Close Encounters Self Defence Course. The focus of the course is on the ability to defend oneself without complicated techniques. The techniques taught to the TY’s will allow them to defend themselves against a variety of conflict situations including punches, kicks, blunt weapons, knives, defence and escapes from the floor, grabbing attacks, bladed weapons, psychological self-defence, voice commands and personal protection theory. Meanwhile, TY1 and 2 headed to Dublin Zoo. After a morning tour of the Zoo involving a Zoo quiz and lunch in the sunshine all students took part in the Zoo’s Conservation Module. This outdoor module began with a history of zoos, looking at Dublin Zoo as a case study. It then covered the role of zoos in modern conservation, their importance for the breeding of endangered species and their role in reintroduction programmes. Focusing on species within Dublin Zoo, the group discussed the conservation challenges faced by these species and how the Zoo supports these species in the wild.
Today TY1 and 4 welcomed back retired Dublin Gaelic Football Champion Kevin McManamon to OLS for Part 3 of the Aware Life Skills for Schools Programme.
This weeks programme included:
THE THINGS YOU DO THAT MESS YOU UP - AND HOW TO STOP DOING THEM
This session helps identify things in life, such as comfort eating or spending money, which may make
us feel better initially but which might lead to problems over time; and how to manage the
temptation.
HOW TO FIX ALMOST ANYTHING
Everything is achievable if it’s broken down into small enough steps. This session introduces a 4-step
plan to help tackle problems and make positive changes in life.
Finally this week all TY students received two of the new OLS thank you cards. These were given to students to write and deliver to their previous work experience employers as a sign of their appreciation for the time spent in their employment and the skills they gained during this time.
Our TY Reps are busy as ever planning their next surprise for you. We hope to reveal it next week!
Speaking of next week… IT’S HERE! Carlingford here we come! This is considered the highlight of the TY Calendar. We look forward to giving you daily updates from Wednesday.
Carlingford is not all we have planned for next week. The TY Enterprise classes are running a funfair next Monday which all first and second years will be invited to attend. The Enterprise classes have been busy planning a range of games to play with yummy prizes on offer. They have also organised an ice cream stall for a tasty treat. All proceeds will go to the Irish Cancer Society and Women’s Aid.
As we near the Easter Break our Final Work Experience and Community Care is fast approaching. Students are asked to collect the relevant details for their week's employers. The final date for submission of employer details is Friday the 8th April. Should your child require Garda Vetting this must be organised as soon as possible.
