This week is Mental Health Awareness week. The Amber flag committee, which was set up in OLS to promote positive mental health in school, marked the week with their green ribbon campaign .The green ribbon is the international symbol of mental health awareness. Students received their ribbons and positive messages during Pastoral Care classes. Staff also received green ribbons. We hope that by simply wearing the ribbon we can show we care for one another and that we are a supportive, inclusive community.

Yesterday at lunch time we had our Clubs Sign Up Day out on the grit pitch at lunch time. Thankfully the weather held up and it was a huge success. We were delighted to see staff and students running their tables telling others about their clubs. Many of the clubs gained some new members and lots of questions were asked throughout the event. Well done to all who took part. Make sure to have a look at all the photos' from the day and the extracurricular timetable attached.

Green Schools Committee are working on an initiative to try to reduce emissions on school grounds. Our aim is to reduce the number of cars at school. We want to encourage students to walk, cycle or 'park and stride' to school. Each form class will receive a record sheet to monitor the distance travelled 'emission free' to school each day from 11th to the 15th of October. The form class with the most emission free distance travelled (in km) to school at the end of the week gets house points and wins a class prize!

It has been a busy week here in OLS. We had our first Saturday of matches against another school in quite some time! The Seniors travelled to Mount Sackville and the Juniors and Minors hosted Mount Sackville at home. A great milestone to reach! A Big well done to the Senior 1 hockey team who won their first league match yesterday. On Monday our 5th and 6th Year Ag Science class had their trip to Dublin Zoo, this was highly enjoyable and also educational. This week is also Study Week and to celebrate all our 1st Year students received their own Student Study and Wellbeing Kit. Full of thoughtful and helpful items. We hope this will help our 1st Years navigate through their first year here in OLS. Book Bingo is also now open, all years can take part, simply pick up a bingo sheet from the library! Make sure to look through the gallery to see all the photos from this week.
World Teacher's Day

Wishing our staff a Happy World Teacher's Day.
Every year on October 5, the world celebrates World Teacher’s Day to highlight the responsibilities, rights, and the value of teachers.
UNESCO introduced World Teachers’ Day in 1994 to draw attention to teachers’ contributions and achievements, as well as to teachers’ concerns and objectives in education.
The theme of World Teacher’s Day 2021 is, ‘Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery.’ The theme recognises teachers for their tireless efforts to keep teaching even during hardships like COVID-19 Pandemic
all our staff can be really proud at how well they have restarted school life both inside and outside the classroom and how they are all assisting a Covid recovery for our students.
Many thanks for all that they do for our community here in OLS.
Yesterday we had some treats in the staffroom at break as a small Happy World Teacher's Day thank you.
Make sure to read the Poem of the week attached below which reflects on the two-way learning process that occurs between teacher and students.

The charity committee along with the House Council have launched the initiative Send a Girl to School.
It costs 150 euro to send a girl to school. We are hoping that each House will raise enough money to send at least one girl to school in Malawi. Students are being asked to donate up to 5 euro to this worthy cause before Friday 8th October. You can give your 5 euro to your 6th Year councillor on Thursday.

Another great turn out at Maths Club last Friday. It was great to see so many of our 1st year students work closely with our 4th year helpers. Today in Maths Club the students were working on BIMDAS, Sets and Number Systems activities, along with some fun sudoku puzzles. Maths Club is on every Friday at lunchtime in the GPA.
