Young Reporters for the Environment Litter Less Campaign: Irish Residential Litter

The following article has been written by 2nd Year student Sarah Agboola as her entry to the Young Reporters for the Environment Competition. Introduction: This article focuses on the litter found in the estate of An Sean Bhaile (situated in Doughiska, Co. Galway) and on the sources of this litter, the impact this litter has on the estate and suggestions and solutions to this problem. Background: The need for such a report arose by participating in the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Litter Less Campaign. My main objective is to raise awareness on the effects of debris and waste on our local environment. Methodology: Information was gathered through the observation and recording of the area. More information, opinions and ideas were received in interviews with the residents of the neighbourhood. Based on interviews: the main sources of waste include the following:  Windblown litter from wheelie bins  Dogs and their owners  Children and adults of the estate  Customers of the local pub The negative impact litter has on our neighbourhood includes the following: 1: Danger to public health Litter attracts vermin and is a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacterial diseases such as skin infections and tetanus are the results of inadequate rubbish control. Items such as broken glass are extreme health hazards in public places. Cuts caused by broken glass are easily infected. Workers and students are left sick and injured. This affects economic activity. 2: Clogs drainage systems Plastics and paper clogs sewage and drainage systems. When clogged, these systems will overflow, allowing filthy water to run along the streets. Water borne diseases will spread easily. 3: Damages natural environment If trash is left lying next to a plant, the plant is unable to grow in all directions and may be confined to a small space. As a result the plant will grow deformed. Windblown litter is blown into rivers, lakes and oceans. Suburban litter soon turns into water pollution. The natural wildlife is killed by consuming our waste and our water cannot be reused once polluted in such a devastating way. Pollution in the ocean can spread from sea to sea through ocean currents. This will have a global effect on the sea creatures of the world. 3: It’s filthy Litter attracts litter. Litter sends out a message that people do not care about their area and children might not like to go out playing on a filthy ground. This leads to a lack of social interaction between neighbours. Recommendations: Recommendations provided by the residents and myself include: having more public bins available in the area, arranging special bins for scooping dog waste, holding a regular clean-up day and creating a ‘tidy estate competition’.
