House System

The start of the new school year saw the introduction of a house system in Taylors for the first time. This will involves students across all years, as well as teachers, being assigned to a particular house. It is hoped that this system will facilitate greater interaction between students across the year groups and pro-actively develop school spirit, collegiality, participation and enjoyment in the co-curricular life of the school. Being part of a house will give students an opportunity to get to know girls in other year groups and participate with them in house activities. This will hopefully encourage new friendships and loyalties which are not just class or year based. Goals of the House System 1. To strengthen the bonds of the Dominican College spirit among the student body. 2. To create opportunities for all students to become involved in co-curricular activities and to experience the satisfaction of participation in team events through various sporting, debating, scientific and cultural competitions that are held throughout the year. 3. To create opportunities for students to become leaders. 4. To encourage good natured and friendly rivalry between the different houses as they compete for the Annual House Trophy. House Names : As Dominican College has a long and proud tradition dating back to 1858, each of the houses has been named after Dominican sisters who played a significant role in the history of the school. Each house will also be assigned a colour. The names and colours are: Baird House – Blue Butler House – Green Heuston House - Yellow Lynch House – Pink Nolan House – Purple Taheny House – Red House Point/Merit Tokens: To encourage good natured and friendly rivalry between the six houses, the house system will facilitate students being rewarded with merit points for a range of commendable and positive activities. At the end of each year a House Trophy will be presented to the house with the greatest number of merit points accumulated during the year.
