College Awareness Week

As part of National College Awareness Week, 21st to the 27th of November, past students of Scoil Chríost Rí kindly took time out from their busy college lives to return to their roots and inform the pupils currently in Transition Year to Sixth Year about their college experience. Speakers and lecturers from colleges including NUI Galway, IT Carlow, Dublin Institute of Technology and Waterford IT also visited the school during the week to speak about what their college offered. National College Awareness Week aims to prepare students for life after the Leaving Cert and become "college ready". Throughout the week student ambassadors welcomed back the past pupils. Nadine Cosgrove, Roisin Flynn, Niamh Quinn, Allison Spillane, Katie Ramsbottom, Claudia Keane, Katie Reddin, Sarah Langan and Paige Fitzgibbon were all of those involved. From business degrees in UL to one of the smallest courses in Ireland, Gaeilge agus Iriseoireacht in UCD, students gained invaluable information from each speaker. Students engaged with the past pupils when they spoke about their college experience on a personal level. We even learned about embarrassing first year college experiences, things no one discusses but play a big part in finding yourself throughout college! The social aspect of college was a popular topic. However, as I'm sure the speakers would tell you it has its consequences. Contrasted with the Leaving Cert, it is up to you to be self-motivated and get through college as there is no teacher going to be chasing you down to hand in an assignment! College is an opportunity for freedom, to put yourself out there, to join clubs and societies, and to make a lot of new friends and contacts and enhance skills for life. Just use that freedom wisely and work hard! PLC courses were also mentioned and the various pathways into Third Level After. This lifted a slight weight off some student’s shoulders as it shows that even if the Leaving Cert doesn't go as well as you planned, there are back up plans. Upon preparing for college life, the past pupils put emphasis on the importance of attending open days, talking to people who do the course you want to do, and generally just getting as much information as possible. Overall, National College Awareness Week was extremely beneficial to students. We were delighted to have the past pupils of the school back, and we’re extremely grateful for them taking their time out to speak to us. We're also very thankful for our Guidance Counsellor and Teacher Ms. Hearn for its organisation. Higher Options

The Irish Times Higher Options is one of Ireland’s biggest student events and has become an annual fixture in our school calendar. This year the majority of 6th years visited the Higher Options event held in the RDS. The aim of the trip was for us to gain a better insight into our further education and possible career opportunities. The day began with an early start to ensure we would arrive at the RDS before the mass of crowds began to gather. Being one of the first schools in to arrive, we had ample time to browse amongst the various college and university stands, ask detailed questions about specific courses and to gain as much information as possible regarding points and subject requirements, course overviews, student accommodation and much more. There were over 170 colleges, universities and Institues of Technology, from all across Ireland, Britain, Europe and further afield, in attendance. There were both student and staff representatives located at each stand ensuring that we received an objective and comprehensive perspective of both the academic and social side of college life. There were also a number of talks and lectures scheduled throughout the day including; ‘The CAO application process’, ‘Studying in Europe’, ‘Working in Science’ and many more. Although I could not attend every talk, those which I did listen to were extremely informative and provided valuable tips and advice. Although the primary focus of Higher Options was to learn more about your prospective colleges and course, there were a number of stands catering for current needs of students for example StudyClix and StudyHub were there to provide guidance and useful advice on exam techniques and study methods. The Institute of Education as well as other grinds schools around Ireland were available to explain the concepts of grinds schools, to offer information about class bookings and their wide range of seasonal revision courses and were even handing out free copies of various subject study notes. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from my experience at Higher Options. I left with a much clearer, informed idea of which direction I hope to purse after the Leaving Cert and also aided my decision in which college and universities I will be choosing for my CAO application later this year.
