International Women’s Day

Thank you to TY students Dominika Timulakova, Natalia Timulakova and Claire O Gara for their research on Gender Equality. Gender Equality The 8th of March is International Women’s Day. Below is some information on gender equality: Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. UNICEF's figures for 2016 say there are about 32 million girls of primary school age and 29 million of lower secondary school age not in education. Globally, about 15 million girls are not expected to ever attend school. If all women completed primary education, there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths and if all women had a secondary education, child deaths would be cut in half, saving 3 million lives. Statistically there are less women working as directors, writers, producers, etc. than men. As a result a lot of films don’t have gender equality, without you realising it. The Bechdel test is a way of evaluating whether or not a film or other work of fiction portrays women in a way that is sexist or characterized by gender stereotyping. To pass the Bechdel test a work must feature at least two women, these women must talk to each other, and their conversation must concern something other than a man. Despite being a fairly easy test to pass, a surprising amount of films do not pass it, such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo. Think of your favourite film, does it pass the test? Although women in Ireland have a lot more rights today than their grandmothers did, they are still not completely equal as men. Statistics show women still face many difficulties when it comes to career advancement. Women are not paid equally for equal roles, and also are not put in higher paid and higher management roles. Irish women make up just 13.2% of board members of the largest publicly listed companies in Ireland, significantly below the EU average of 21.2%. The Gender Action Plan (GAP) specifies how UNICEF will promote gender equality across all of the organization’s work at the global, regional and country levels, in alignment with the UNICEF Strategic Plan. The GAP elaborates the gender dimensions of the programmatic results across the outcome areas of the Strategic Plan along with the relevant indicators for measuring success. It also specifies the steps UNICEF is undertaking with regard to institutional effectiveness in implementing the programmatic work on gender, through commitment of resources and strengthening of staffing, capacity and systems. Thank you for reading, we hope that you learnt something new. Happy International Women’s Day!
