On Thursday the 4th of October Holy Faiths under 16 football team played their first league match against Mercy Navan. The match was at home on pitch 34 in Saint Anne’s Park. The match began at 12:00. Holy Faith started off very strong, Eve Guerin(Holy Faith goalie) saving three incredible shots on goal within the first few minutes and Eimear Mangan scoring the first point of the game. However Mercy Navan caught up by scoring their first goal after many saved attempts, followed by four points. The referee was very strict on tackling and didn’t let the game flow. This seemed to effect Holy Faiths game negatively. But the positive side was Eimear Mangan scoring 3 points from frees. The first half ended with Holy Faith 3 goals and 4 points down .
After the first half Holy Faith had a bit of work to do in order to get back in the game. The second half began and Mercy Navan started off strong scoring a point within the first minute. Holy Faiths Eimear Gibson then made an excellent run passing a brilliant ball into Sadie Loughman who scored a point to get Holy Faith back on the score board. The referee later blew up a free giving Roisin Quigley a free kick on the half way line. She layed it on to Caoimhe Hoy who then dropped it into Eimear Mangan in the full forward line. Eimear then drilled it into the back of the net scoring a great goal. Holy Faith were back in the game after their great play as a team. With ten minutes left there was still a gap in the score with Navan ahead. Eimear Mangan was then awarded a penalty. She took a lovely strike just a bit too high and hit the crossbar, however her great reactions allowed her to pass into Sadie Loughman who scored a goal. With only a few minutes left Mercy Navan scored a few lucky goals. The whistle blew and unfortunately Mercy Navan came out ahead winning the game. It was a disappointing result for Holy Faith, although they never gave up.
