Healthy Hearts

Dear Parent/Guardian,
On Monday December 2nd and Wednesday December 4th Naas CBS will be overseeing a heart screening clinic within the school for all Transition Year and Senior Cycle students.
The ‘Healthy Hearts Healthy Lives’ foundation will be conducting the cardiac screening clinic in the school throughout the days mentioned above.
‘Healthy Hearts Healthy Lives’ was founded in 2011 and facilitates locally arranged cardiac screening clinics for those aged 14+ at various centres in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Their aim is to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS).
The screening programme consists of the following:
• Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Questionnaire @ initial screening session
• An ECG is a simple and useful test which records the rhythm and electrical activity of your heart.
• Consultant Cardiologist’s report on ECG. (Dr McGlinchey is the Consultant Cardiologist employed and he will be adhering to (2007) ESC guidelines for screening athletes with specific reference to SCD screening.)
• Echocardiogram, should this be required. This will take place at a later date.
• Referral to appropriate medical facility, if required.
• Those requiring follow up will receive a phone call, outlining exactly what is involved.
• Personal results letter to each individual screened and their GP if required.
Undetected heart conditions affect about 1 in 300 people in Ireland. The primary focus is on screening people who wish to engage in sporting activities, however, the service is available to all who wish to undergo screening.
All staff used in the administering and interpreting of the screening programme are medically qualified and experienced practitioners.
The cost of this cardiac screening is €40 per child. Each participant will be required to fill out a permission slip, questionnaire and consent form prior to the screening.
We feel that this is a hugely important and worthwhile exercise that can highlight any underlying health issues that may be affecting an individual.
More information on ‘Healthy Hearts Healthy Lives’ can be found at www.healthyheartshealthylives.com/
After the midterm break further information will be sent home via the app about how your son can get involved in this.
Many thanks
