'Architects in Schools' Workshop

Our school hosted the third and final workshop of the 'Architects in Schools' initiative with Ghinlon Architects on Wednesday 5th February. Our students were taken through the design process with architect Ghinlon Wang who also taught our students the basics of model making. The design task set for students was how the library space in the school could be re-imagined to reflect the digital age. These libraries incorporated more informal seating and desk arrangements where students can meet in groups and discuss group work, while also including more formal 'quiet zones', where students can focus on individual study. There were a number of groups that took a departure from the brief and found totally alternative uses for the space. The workshops provided a valuable insight into the design process and how architects think and work. There were a number of students present who are very interested in studying architecture and can use the experience when preparing a portfolio for college courses and interviews. Many thanks to Mr. Fitzpatrick for his work in organising these workshops.

A number of our Transition Year students traveled to Bank of Ireland's head office in Baggot Plaza yesterday. The purpose of the trip was to promote accounting as a career option. The event was hosted by BOI and ACCA. The students got the opportunity to hear about BOI's graduate program and received talks from a sample of accountants who detailed the varied roles that they hold in BOI. There are over 500 different accounting roles in BOI across their various departments. Students then participated in a challenge where they had to design a product to sell at a music festival. They were split into groups of 6 and had to come up with a business plan, a marketing poster and deliver a 4 minute pitch to a group of judges. All groups delivered innovative products and excellent well structured pitches and answered questions posed by the judges. All groups displayed excellent teamwork skills, creativity, communication skills and the ability to think on their feet. The BOI judges were extremely impressed by the quality, behaviour and creativity of our students. Many thanks to Ms. Carter & Ms. Lennon for their work with this group.
