All week we are celebrating reading here at OLS. The theme for this year is JUST READ! Our 'One School, One Book' is the wonderful ‘The Weight of Water’ by Sarah Crossan. We will all read this together as a whole school for the week anytime we get a chance, so be sure to have your book in your bag at all times! Sarah Crossan will be visiting the school in November to talk to us about her books and writing, she will also do a book signing so hang on to your book if you enjoy it and would like to meet her. Thursday morning has been set aside for a more whole-school approach to Reading Week. The theme for Thursday is Hats Off to Reading! Staff and students are invited to wear a hat on the day and a prize for best hat will be awarded. So, get your thinking caps on over the next few days. There will be plenty of DROP EVERYTHING AND READ sessions all week, as well as book quizzes, reading aloud , and competitions. JUNIOR Competition: Design a bookmark to promote reading in OLS – the winner will have their bookmark professionally printed for all students of OLS SENIOR Competition: Design a poster promoting the benefits of reading - winning poster is printed and put up around the school building for this academic year. Happy Reading!

the lesson of the moth i was talking to a moth the other evening he was trying to break into an electric light bulb and fry himself on the wires why do you fellows pull this stunt i asked him because it is the conventional thing for moths or why if that had been an uncovered candle instead of an electric light bulb you would now be a small unsightly cinder have you no sense plenty of it he answered but at times we get tired of using it we get bored with the routine and crave beauty and excitement fire is beautiful and we know that if we get too close it will kill us but what does that matter it is better to be happy for a moment and be burned up with beauty than to live a long time and be bored all the while so we wad all our life up into one little roll and then we shoot the roll that is what life is for it is better to be a part of beauty for one instant and then cease to exist than to exist forever and never be a part of beauty our attitude toward life is come easy go easy we are like human beings used to be before they became too civilized to enjoy themselves and before i could argue him out of his philosophy he went and immolated himself on a patent cigar lighter i do not agree with him myself i would rather have half the happiness and twice the longevity but at the same time i wish there was something i wanted as badly as he wanted to fry himself

Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide or press an ear against its hive. I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out, or walk inside the poem’s room and feel the walls for a light switch. I want them to waterski across the surface of a poem waving at the author’s name on the shore. But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it. They begin beating it with a hose to find out what it really means.
