Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, I hope you are all keeping well and continuing to follow the advice we have all been given regarding our social interactions and social distancing. In addition, we all need to remember the importance of hand hygiene and cough etiquette. It may be tempting with the spell of good weather to congregate and meet up with friends - I am appealing to you not to do this. We all need to play our part in fighting this virus, no matter how inconvenient it is for us. I don't think it's too much to ask. Lives are at risk. Our family members that are frontline workers are facing danger everyday for our benefit. The very least they deserve is our cooperation in the simple task of social distancing and staying home where possible. I want to take the opportunity to thank those of you who have sent such supportive messages, thanking the staff for their efforts in maintaining learning in this extraordinary situation. Rest assured that teachers are working hard every day in difficult personal and professional circumstances to ensure continuity of learning. I am seeing so many creative ways that teachers are engaging in to support our students and I know that this will continue and expand. Please be patient and accept that there are a number of ways that our teachers are supporting the students. I know this time is really difficult for you, our students. To our 6th years, a special message to keep going, keep revising, keep submitting the work and keep positive. Exam class students (or others) might like to access The Educational Company of Ireland Revise Wise series of books for free by: 1. Going to edcolearning.ie/trial 2. Login or Register 3. Enter code (for Junior Cycle enter 9878, for Leaving Cert enter 6456) I am making a special appeal to students and parents to please respect the online learning environment. I am sorry to say that I have received one report of inappropriate behaviour where a private code was passed by our students to others not from the school to access and disturb an online lesson. Parents, you are rightly expecting teachers to step up to the plate in these extraordinary circumstances. I am asking you too, to step up to the plate in ensuring your son/daughter respects this learning environment. It may be timely to read our Acceptable Use Policy www.cpckilcullen.com/information/policies/acceptable-use-policy/ I am also hearing some feedback from teachers about a lack of engagement from some students. I am very mindful that there may be very good reasons for this but I would urge parents to check with their son/daughter and to see that they are logging into their school email account regularly. As mentioned previously any issues regarding login etc. should be sent to schoolclosure2020@gmail.com Finally, a reminder of the hashtag #edshareie on Twitter where resources are constantly being shared of everything from experiments, demonstrations, competitions, presentations and more. I wish each and every one of you continued good health and keep positive. Best wishes J Leonard

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, I hope you are keeping well. Even in these extraordinary times it is necessary to keep looking ahead and planning for next year continues. As you know, work was well underway in providing guidance for TY students in selecting the appropriate programme and subjects for next year in 5th year. I will be in touch very soon to explain how students will indicate their subject preferences with their parents assistance through VsWare. There will be assistance provided in how this will work. In preparation for this MsMcDonnell has kindly offered to set up a Google Meet with TY students on an individual basis through your school email address. There must be a parent/guardian also present during the meeting and the meeting will be recorded. This is necessary in line with Child Protection guidelines. If you would like to arrange such a meeting please make contact with MsMcDonnell at elainemcdonnell@cpckilcullen.com I will be in touch again soon regarding the process for indicating subject preferences. In the meantime, keep safe, stay home, practice social distance and wash your hands. Best wishes J Leonard

24 March, 2020 - Covid-19 Statement from the Department of Education and Skills

All schools, pre-schools and further and higher education settings will remain closed to students until 19 April 2020. The decision has been taken following advice from the NPHET (National Public Health Emergency Team) as part of efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19. All young people and children are urged to practice social distancing, and to minimise physical contact to keep themselves and others healthy and to limit the spread of infection. This should include minimising social contact, avoiding meeting up and keeping physical space of two metres between each other. Parents and guardians are urged to support young people and children to follow those simple guidelines. Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD said: “This is an extremely difficult time for everyone, not least students and their parents. “The decision to keep schools closed until after the Easter break is based on public health advice. It is a hugely important aspect of our continued effort to limit the spread of Covid-19. “My message to students facing exams is that they should keep focused, keep working and try, as much as possible, to prepare as normal for the state exams. We are doing everything in our power to make sure those exams happen. “Teachers and students have answered the call to remote learning with exceptional flexibility and adaptability. You are all a credit to the education system. “I am also deeply conscious of significant work being done to ensure continuity of learning across our higher and further education institutions. The impact of emergency measures has not stopped education, it has inspired innovation and we are indebted to all those continuing to provide education in these trying times.”

Good morning everybody, As we continue to adjust to distance learning can I ask that parents/guardians check with their sons/daughters to ensure that they are logging in regularly to their school email accounts and Google Classroom to engage with the work being set by teachers, notes provided etc. In addition, many teachers set out programmes of work prior to our closure and it is important that students engage in this work over this period. Revision of work already covered should also be part of students daily routine at this time. Teachers are doing their best to balance between overwhelming students with work and supporting them as best they can in this situation. Your patience and support at this time is very much appreciated. President Higgins is urging young people to respond in a generous way to the Health Service Executive’s advice on measures to alleviate the spread of Covid-19. president.ie/en/media-library/news-releases/statement-from-president-of-ireland-following-his-signature-of-the-health-preservation-and-protection-and-other-emergency-measures-in-the-public-interest-bill-2020 I have been receiving suggestions to share with the school community that you may find useful during this time: Contact Tracing All people should be encouraged to keep a diary of all places they visit and a list of the people they have physical contact with on a daily basis. If this is taken on board, it would reduce the workload of those working tirelessly with the job of Contact Tracing in the weeks ahead. Good morning everybody, I hope this message finds you well. To all of the school community mothers, I hope you managed to mark Mother's Day yesterday albeit in a very different way this year. Certainly, the use of FaceTime, WhatsApp and other communication tools has never been so necessary and welcome. While it can be a challenging time to remain apart from our loved ones and friends, the weekend again highlighted the importance of following the social distance and hygiene advice that we have been given. I am appealing again to the entire school community to play your part in minimising the spread of Covid-19. Every one of us has a role to play, young and older. The State Examinations Commission have published a Frequently Asked Questions document following the announcement of the cancellation of the Leaving Certificate Oral examinations and some of the practical examinations. This document can be found here: www.examinations.ie/misc-doc/BI-SE-67826275.pdf The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) also issued an update with regard to CBAs for 2nd and 3rd students. You can see the dates involved here: ncca.ie/media/4500/junior_cycle_key_dates_2019_2020.pdf I will keep you updated as new information is received. In the meantime, continue to take care and keep up with your studies as best you can. Best wishes J Leonard, Principal.

TY aptitude test results

Good morning everybody, Ms McDonnell had planned on giving back the aptitude test results to the fourth years during this time and had also scheduled some one to one sessions in relation to subject choice for 5th year. Mr Dennehy has set up an email address through which parents can access their son/daughter's report. If parents could email levelgreport@cpckilcullen.com and put their child's name in the subject bar Mr Dennehy will be able to send the report to you. Ms McDonnell says that any students who made an appointment with her re subject choice will be prioritised on our return and if anyone would like to contact her via email ( elainemcdonnell@cpckilcullen.com ) regarding this while we are away from school that is no problem at all. My thanks to Ms McDonnell and Mr Dennehy for this. J Leonard.
