The Ombudsman for Children needs your help
Created : 25 Nov 2022, 12:46 PM
Archived : 09 Dec 2022, 12:00 AM
Dear Friends,
The Ombudsman for Children needs your help to hear from children aged 12 to 17 about children’s mental health and mental health services. Can you please help us have children to complete this survey:
The survey should take about 5 minutes to complete.
For Children
The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, works to make sure that children (everyone under 18) have their rights respected in Ireland. One part of his job is to listen to what children think. You can get more information about Niall and the work of the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) at www.oco.ie. You can find more information about children’s rights at www.oco.ie/itsyourright
We know that mental health and services to help children with their mental health are an important issue for children. Many children have told us this. We would like to know more about children’s mental health, understand more about what causes mental health difficulties for children, and what might help improve children’s mental health. That is why we are asking you to fill in this survey. We are not asking for your name or address or any other information that would tell us or anyone else who you are or what you think.
Your opinions and ideas really matter, whether your mental health is good, if you are experiencing mental health difficulties or if you have had difficulties in the past. We hope you will share them with the OCO so that we can keep working to improve things for all children in Ireland. You also need to agree to take part so don’t forget to tick the box below and ask a parent or guardian to do the same!
For Parents/Guardians
If you are the parent/guardian of a child under 18, it would be great if you could ask your child/children to fill in the survey themselves, or by supporting them to complete the survey as necessary. You also need to give your consent for your child to take part. If you have more than one child under 18, a separate survey should be filled in by each child.

The survey will stay open until 7th December at midnight!
Thank you for your help.
If you have any questions about the survey, please email education@oco.ie.

Senior Cycle SPHE Consultation

Archived : 07 Dec 2022, 12:00 AM
A public consultation has now opened on the background paper and review brief for the redevelopment of senior cycle SPHE.
It is most important that school communities, educators, parents, and students have a voice in this process and the NCCA’s consultation pathways are set out here:
ncca.ie/en/senior-cycle/curriculum-developments/senior-cycle-social-personal-andhealth-education-sphe/
Alternatively, schools and individuals can email sphedevelopments@ncca.ie to share their perspectives on questions such as:
• Should senior cycle SPHE be mandatory for all senior cycle students in all schools? Why/why not?
• How much time should be allocated to SPHE in senior cycle?
• In framing a senior cycle curriculum, what's the really important learning that young people need to acquire in SPHE?
The consultation closes at 5.00pm on 6th December next.

Kilcullen GAA won both the Division 1 League Title and the Intermediate Championship this year. We at CPC are so proud that the team was filled with both current and past CPC students. Today our 1st and 2nd year students got the chance to give our CPC students the cheers, claps, whistles and whoops they deserved for accomplishing such a difficult feat. Ms. Murphy who has trained a lot of the Kilcullen team during their time in CPC gave a talk about how hard work and dedication is needed to achieve great things no matter what walk of life and these girls have shown that in spades this year. Well done again girls...!!

Although the result didn't go our way the lads showed great determination and enthusiasm and improved as the game progressed. A good solid start and something build on.

Parent Teacher meetings

Dear parents/guardians,
as you are aware parent teacher meetings have taken place online while Covid restrictions were in place. There is no doubt that this model had some advantages but also was less than perfect with some disadvantages. Last year we surveyed staff and parents about the experience and it raised a number of very useful points which help in planning either an online or in-person meeting.
The Department of Education has issued instructions to schools stating that "“there is no longer a requirement to restrict visitors to schools and schools should revert to the normal arrangements for visitors. In this context parent teacher meetings should resume."
We are mindful of the fact that a short face to face conversation can be extremely useful between parent, teacher and student, especially in examination years. We are also mindful of the fact that due to restrictions, many of our parents have not had the opportunity to be in our school building or ever meet any of our staff. With this in mind, and the importance of "community" over "convenience", our upcoming 3rd and 6th year parent teacher meetings will be in-person.
We are working on making that experience as beneficial for all as possible. To do this we need your cooperation on a few key points:
* Please keep discussions with each teacher short - if a longer discussion is needed an appointment should be made for another time.
* If there is a long queue to meet a teacher, consider seeing another teacher and coming back later.
* Please be mindful that the meeting ends at 6.45pm - this means that teachers should be finished meeting parents at this time. Please do not join a queue that will not allow this to happen.
* For 3rd, 5th and 6th year students remember that your son/daughter is invited to attend with you. Students should remain with you at all times.
The parent teacher meeting is just one moment where parents can engage with teachers - teachers remain available via email, phone or appointment to discuss progress or issues as they arise.
We look forward to welcoming parents on 13th October for the 3rd year PT meeting and then on 25th October for the 6th year PT meeting.
Details for all other years and the format will follow closer to the time.
Kind regards
J Leonard
