Our volunteers have returned from Zambia and have had a wonderful experience. They worked in a town called Mazabuka in Zambia with the in-country partner. They spent some time working on a farm and helped to harvest maize and pick soya beans. While doing this work they camped in tents under a mango tree! Back in the town, they stayed in the Community House which is similar to an orphanage and spent time with the boys who live there and shared cultural experiences. They worked in one of the local schools painting classrooms and interacting with the Grade 7 students. They visited the Flamboyant School for Children with Special Needs which is funded by Irish Aid. They visited some Irish Mercy Nuns in Kaleya who established many hospitals and schools in the area. They supported local work done by women in Nchete House by purchasing paintings, crafts and clothes from them and experienced first hand some extreme poverty in the compound of Ndeke on the outskirts of the town. All the volunteers took part in a $2 dollar a day challenge to walk in the shoes of a local. At the end of the trip the volunteers spent two days in Livingstone to rest and unwind after their hard work and amazing experience. The School Immersion Trip was very successful and benefited all involved.

Today our Transition Year students enjoyed a trip out to Dublin focusing on Development Education. They visited the Irish Aid Centre of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade where they participated in two workshops. One workshop was on the work of Irish Aid and the other was an interactive game on Food Security - students got really competitive when potato blight struck! Very eye-opening! They then headed for Croke Park to do the Skyline Tour and visit the GAA Museum. Great day was had by all!
