4 teams from Holy Family took part in the Maths Pi Quiz on Thursday 14th March. After 8 rounds, one of our teams finished joint 1st. Holy Family Newbridge and Holy Family Rathcoole then had a tie break round of 10 to decide winner. Incredibly both teams scored the same in this tiebreak round meaning there was 1 more tie break question. Holy Family Newbridge came out on top on this round to take the win. They now go forward to represent the school in the All Ireland Series.

The 4 members of the winning team were Leah O Connor, Dervla Armour, Meadbh Hartnett and Lauren Murphy. Well done to all that took part.

Our 6th year Home Economics students took part in sensory analysis testing to apply their understanding of how these tests are carried out and how the results are analysed. They completed a preference ranking test to see what orange juice they prefer (Tropicana won!). They did a paired comparison test to see if they could identify the difference between two McVities rich tea biscuits (66% could identify the sweeter version). They also participated in a descriptive ranking test to determine which crisps were the saltiest out of three samples of ready salted products (this was challenging...they were all close at 1g per 100g O'Donnell's, 1g per 100g Tesco, 1.13g per 100g Keogh's).

Last week we invited all students to bring their favourite books to school to participate in our Drop Everything And Read ( D.E.A.R ) week-long celebration of reading.

Whether it was a thrilling novel, a captivating biography, or a beloved classic, students were welcome to immerse themselves throughout the week in the joy of reading both in and out of class, at various time/s of their subject teacher's choosing.

Reading is not only a fundamental skill but also a source of endless inspiration and imagination. By continuously encouraging students to embrace reading, we aim to foster a lifelong love of literature and learning.

*Reading for pleasure has many non-literacy benefits and can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression and improve wellbeing throughout life (The Reading Agency 2015).
