Congratulations to Team Greenspan from TY who won the national finals of the Generation Euro economics competition on Friday 3rd March in the Central Bank in Dublin.
The team who consists of captain Eoin McGloin along with team members Oisin Fitzgerald, Luke Hamilton, Sean Ballantine and Ray Solano will now represent Ireland at the European Central Bank in April where they will meet President Mario Draghi and the winning teams from across the euro area to take part in a series of competitions, workshops and events. They will also get the opportunity to meet the governors of the other European central banks.
On the day of the final, the team presented a 20 minute argument where they explained the factors that affect price stability and the role of monetary policy measures; determined an appropriate interest rate that the ECB will set for its main refinancing operation on March 11th; and assessed economic conditions in the euro area on the basis of data available to the governing council of the ECB. They also faced a tough 23 minute Q&A session from 4 judges comprised of chief economists such as Gabriel Fagan from the central bank. The team beat off stiff competition from The Institute of Education Leeson Dublin and Scoil Mhuire Cork.
Philip Lane, the governor of the Central Bank, commended Summerhill College on their extensive understanding of economic and monetary policy and was highly impressed with their presentation and ability to effortlessly answer and debate on the tough questions posed to them during the Q&A session.
The teams performance was assessed on:
the rationale underlying the proposed interest rate decision
the accuracy of that decision
familiarity with, and accurate use of, expressions and terms related to monetary policy
the structure of the presentation
oral presentation skills
