I hope the Couch to 5k training is going well for everyone. Operation Transformation is back on TV, and they always provide some very useful resources. They have a 5k plan that you might find useful ot.rte.ie/get-involved-2/5k-2/ They also have their own basic fitness test. Try this, and then work on these exercises to improve your overall fitness. This will help you complete the Couch to 5k. ot.rte.ie/fitness-test/

We encourage all students to make sure you are using your scheduled PE time to complete some of the following: 1. Use your PE time to train for the couch to 5k. Anyone who completes the 5k will be entered in a draw to win some Elvery’s vouchers, so get training. 2. Would you be fit enough to pass the Irish army fitness test? Give this a go www.dlrsportspartnership.ie/images/The_Fighting_Fit_Challenge_Updated_web_compressed.pdf 3. Maybe you would just like to totally switch off. Have you a printer? Some mindful colouring might be a good option to take your mind off things www.betweensessions.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/mindfulness-coloring-book-4_25-16.pdf 4. Try this 13 minute body scan meditation for teenagers youtu.be/X462QPGZQt4 5. Do 2-3 rounds of this home workout youtu.be/X462QPGZQt4

Dear Parents/ Guardians and students, Thanks to all staff, students and Parents/ Guardians for collectively putting the shoulder to the wheel this week to get our Online Learning off to a really positive start. As you are aware , it has required a lot of patience, planning and understanding on all sides to kickstart the process in such a successful manner. We have surveyed all staff on the level of engagement so far . The Feedback has been extremely positive on all fronts. We ask all parents/ guardians to ensure that our high level of engagement continues. However, we would like to take this opportunity to update you and clarify with you a few points that have arisen during week 1. Firstly, all students are expected to be visible on camera for class unless related to a Broadband issue. If there is a technical problem that is preventing you from using the camera we are asking parents to email the relevant teacher of same. Secondly, we have decided not to do pre exams during this seriously restrictive COVID period. We will , however, review the scheduling of pre exams or other viable alternatives on our full return to school. This will be done in full consultation with staff, students and parents/guardians. Therefore, please , hold off on pre exam payments unless we inform you otherwise at a later date. Meanwhile, teachers will improvise on how best to assess and monitor their students progress through a range of Online assessments of different durations using past questions and/or past papers. Please note You are able to access your son(s)/ daughter(s) Christmas results Online from today. Finally, we would like to remind everyone that full attendance on the Online classes is expected by the Department of Education and Skills. So we expect full cooperation on this matter . Thanks for your continued support and encouragement to both staff and Students of BCS. Ní neart go Cur le chéile. Denis , Maurice & Maria

We hope that the 5k training is going well. The most important thing is to make a start. Dust down those runners and get out for a walk this evening. For those recording their walks and runs, we would encourage you to use STRAVA and to join the Blackwater Community School Club. For those of you using Garmin devices or Fitbits etc, you can sync these apps with Strava and your activities will automatically upload there.

Morning to all students. We would encourage you all to take a screen time break and get some fresh air and physical activity. Some options for you this week: 1. Start training for the Couch to 5k event that we will hold in February. Use an app like Strava to record you walks/runs. Make sure to join the Blackwater Community School Strava Club. 2. Try a PE Class with Joe Wicks. There are live classes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9am. You can also watch back previous classes. Please see his channel here youtube.com/c/TheBodyCoachTV 3. Maybe a chance to do a home workout and practice your Gaeilge at the same time might appeal to you youtu.be/kAnf2mA_OKw 4. Maybe you would benefit from this 30 minute Yoga for Beginners class aimed at teenagers youtu.be/6Ekep9GqvaM 5. Sometime something simple as a walk is a great way to get a break. Aim for at least 10,000 steps a day and try increase the pace of your walk to work your heart a bit more. The most important thing is to get out and get active. The WHO recommends an average of 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous intensity, mostly aerobic, physical activity, across the week. These 60 minutes do not have to be in one go, so all those little pieces of exercise add up.
