Lourdes 2016

On September 7th, 5 6th year students travelled to Lourdes, France.
Lourdes is a place of pilgrimage as in 1858, 14 year old Bernadette Soubirous saw a vision of The Virgin Mary. She saw the vision in the grotto another 17 times. After years of convincing the people in her community that she was telling a true story, it was recognised as a sacred place.
Everyday in Lourdes was a whole other experience in itself! We woke up to a fresh croissant and roll each morning and then headed off to the wards to begin our days work. We cleaned the pilgrims rooms while they attended breakfast. Normally, there was a mass on before lunch and then another after lunch. The work was tough but endlessly rewarding.
One day we all ventured off to the baths, which were an experience to say the least. The atmosphere was indescribable and it was an unforgettable experience. Another afternoon we had to perform the stations of the cross for the pilgrims, which they thoroughly enjoyed. We also visited the small town of Bartres, where St. Bernadette grew up.
We made lifelong friends with those both young and old and we can't wait to go back again next year to see them all. It was a really enjoyable and an incredible opportunity. We are very lucky that Sion Hill has the privilege to be represented by 5 students.
