It has been a busy fortnight for the school's various tennis teams. This year we put in 3 boys teams and for the first time a girls team.

Our U16 girls lost out by the most narrow of margins to Villiers school Limerick. All the girls will be underage again next year so there is great potential here to go further next time around.

Our U14 boys had a great display in their first outing for the school and saw off Colaiste Spiorad Naomh to qualify for a semi final vs Glenstal Abbey next week.

The U16 boys came up against very strong opposition away to Douglas but showed a great attitude throughout and did the school great credit.

Finally our U19 boys have qualified for semi finals after a tough contest against Glanmire in the Causeway tennis club. This performance should stand to them when they take on St Francis's school in Rochestown in their bid to reach the final.

This week saw Friary Rugby come to a close for the school year. Both the boys and girls teams have had some great days out and there was fantastic talent to be seen on the pitch.

Highlights of the season were the boys winning competitive games in the local school's blitz in Dungarvan RFC and the girls beating some top schools in a Fethard blitz. Thanks to Joey Doherty and Dungarvan RFC for their continued coaching and support. It wouldn't be possible without them. ️

Ballyhass Coachford Lee Valley Harbour. Thursday 27th April, 97 of our TY students enjoyed an unforgettable adventure in the great outdoors. They enjoyed  Munster’s largest and most exciting inflatable water park. It covers 40m squared of an old quarry lake. The students jumped, slide, bounced and raced each other around the wipeout style course. They had the opportunity to try archery an  ancient sport that helped students to hone their coordination, balance and self-control. Some even thought they were Robin Hood!!!! Great fun was had in the high nets course  11 metres in the air, students bounced,  jumped, crawled, and rolled. There was also a team challenge course where students had to work  together to complete obstacles and games, all the time having a blast.  Many thanks to Mr Ryan, Ms Shanley, Mr F Walsh, Ms Feeney and Mr Dunford for travelling with the students.

3.    Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for School Transport for the 2023/24 school year is as follows:

·         Children are eligible for transport at primary level where they reside not less than 3.2 kilometres from and are attending their nearest national school, and at post-primary level where they reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are attending their nearest post-primary school/education centre as determined by the department/Bus Éireann, having regard to ethos and language.

·         Children who are eligible for school transport and who have completed the application and payment process on time will be accommodated on school transport services where such services are in operation.

·         Children who are not eligible for school transport, but who complete the application and payment process on time, will be considered for spare seats that may exist after eligible children have been facilitated; such seats are referred to as concessionary seats.

·         Because of the nature of concessionary transport for non-eligible children and the priority of providing places for eligible children, there may be an excess of demand over supply for concessionary places, in these cases Bus Éireann will allocate tickets for spare seats using an agreed selection process.

·         In addition, temporary alleviation measures will continue for the 2023/24 school year, pending completion of the school transport scheme review. This means that transport will be provided where such services are in operation for post-primary pupils who are eligible for transport to their nearest school and are attending their second nearest school and who apply and pay on time.

4.    Pupils from Ukraine

Pupils from Ukraine who require school transport should not apply on the Bus Éireann family portal but should visit gov.ie/ukraine for details on how to apply. Please note that any pupils from Ukraine who are currently on school transport do not need to re-apply for the 2023/24 school year unless they have changed address or school.

1st Year Hockey

Munster 1st Year Div 3 finals day in Thurles: Our 1st year hockey team are Munster runners up after drawing both their games in today’s round robin final. In game 1 vs the hosts Ursuline Thurles, the game finished 0-0, we then narrowly lost 2-1 on shuttles with Caoimhe Curran neatly tucking the ball beyond their keeper and Summer O’Neill making 3 great saves. In the 2nd game we flipped it around winning 2-1 on shuttles vs Midleton after it again finished 0-0 at fulltime. This time it was Catriona Conroy and Lauren Fitzgearld who showed composure and calmness to give us a well deserved win, as Summer managed 4 saves! A great day had by all on our final day of hockey for this year. We look forward to seeing the girls with their hockey sticks ready in August/September, when they will be representing the Friary at Minor level! ️
