St. Monica – the mother of Augustine and the patron saint of our college chapel – was a great woman entirely
and she certainly had her share of trials and tribulations from an early age. Married young, as was the custom of the time, she had to suffer a troublesome pagan husband and a hostile mother-in-law, both of whom were ultimately converted as a result of her prayers and good example. Monica’s practical experience makes her the perfect helper for anyone whose marriage or family life might be under pressure.
Augustine tells us that what most impressed him about his mother was her generosity towards the poor and her great love of the Mass, which she attended daily. Again, there is a lesson here for us, in that we must never underestimate the value of the good example which we give by simply living as best we can from day to day. Actions really do speak louder than words!
Another thing about Monica which made a deep impression on Augustine concerned the time he drifted from the Church. She was so disappointed and annoyed with him that she banished him from the house, but she later had second thoughts and brought him back again. And Augustine tells us that this change of heart on the part of his mother made a lasting impression on him. A good lesson arising out of this for all of us is the value of keeping the door open, no matter how far astray young folk may appear to be going from time to time.
We’ve mentioned before the remarkable similarities which exist between St. Augustine’s times and our own, despite the sixteen centuries which divide us. In St. Augustine’s day, pretty much like today, people were complaining about how things had gone to the bad. It may be useful to remind ourselves again of Augustine’s response in Sermon 311.8:
“You say the times are troublesome, the time are burdensome, the times are miserable. Live rightly and you will change the times. The times have never hurt anyone. Those who are hurt are human beings; those by whom they are hurt are human beings. So, change human beings and the times will be changed.”
April 24th is the feast of the Conversion of St. Augustine and Sunday April 26th is the feast of Mary, Mother of Good Counsel. Be assured that all the Friary Family will be remembered in our Masses and prayers on these two major Augustinian feasts!
