Annual Team Hope Shoebox Appeal another resounding success with 168 boxes collected for children in need

Congratulations to everyone on a very successful Team Hope ShoeBox Appeal. The success of this year's project underlines the leadership shown by TY students working with their Community Care teacher Ms Brennan. She tells us “A Big thank you to the Students Council for organizing a civvies day on Friday the 22nd of October which helped raise €1085 for the Team Hope Annual Shoe Box appeal that the Community Care class students have been working on. We were delighted with the funds raised and appreciate the generosity of students, parents and staff of Cross and Passion College. Students in our Community Care class began this project in September, by launching a campaign to get shoe boxes from all students and staff in our school. They then approached various businesses in Kilcullen such as Burke’s Pharmacy, Euro Giant, Spar, and Bernard Berney’s Pharmacy asking for donations to put into the box’s which they were delighted to receive. Building on previous years work by Ms Flanagan with Team Hope, what started off as a TY project this year turned into a whole school initiative. Ms Groome, Ms Doyle and Ms Lawlor got on board with their 1st and 2nd year SPHE groups and Ms Bucke’s Young SVP class to help out with wrapping the shoe boxes with Christmas wrapping paper, and bringing in items to put into the box’s. Many other members of staff, parents and students also donated boxes, toys, sweets, hygiene care products and treats to help spread the spirit of Christmas to those children living in poverty in North Africa and Eastern Europe. In addition to the links forged with other year groups, the Community Care class has developed intergenerational links with the residents of Ballard Lodge Nursing Home. We were delighted to welcome Bernie Brennan, Director of Nursing and resident Monica recently to make a final presentation of Shoe boxes they had wrapped and filled for donation also. Monica is a very talented knitter and created some beautiful woollen hats for inclusion in the boxes. We are delighted to say that we have put together 168 shoe boxes which will be shipped off to their various locations around the world.” Hannah Lee Parnell, one of the students involved says “We thoroughly enjoyed helping out with the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. From wrapping empty shoeboxes to filling them with lots of gifts, it truly helped us realise how fortunate we are to receive gifts each Christmas, which for many children is not normal. We now realise how often we take things for granted such as receiving a good education and we should stop complaining about it as many people do not have the privilege to be properly educated. Being involved in this year’s shoebox appeal also brought us so much joy and happiness as we know that children who are less fortunate than ourselves will receive a shoebox at Christmas time.”

Our thanks to Vet Ernan O'Donnell from Sycamore Lodge Veterinary Hospital who visited 4D today. Ernan spoke about veterinary issues, and gave valuable insights into this profession as part of TY Equestrian Studies. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and it was a very worthwhile learning experience, most especially given our position in Kildare as The Thoroughbred County where huge numbers of people are employed in the equine industry.
1st year subject preferences through VsWare - important

Dear Parents/Guardians, I hope this email finds you all well. It is hard to believe that we are at that stage of the year already where we ask your son/daughter to indicate their preferences for the subjects they will continue with following the taster programme in 1st year. As you know, the students have been trying out subjects on a rotational basis since they joined us here in CPC and they are now in the final rotation having experienced all subjects. This is important as it allows students to experience the subject for a short time to see if they like it and it allows their teachers to tell them about the subject and what might lie ahead. Each year we do our best to accommodate students with their preferences. However, please do note that some subjects will be oversubscribed. It is really important that care is taken to rank the subjects in order of preference so that hopefully students get a subject that they will be happy with. Once subjects are allocated there will be very little possibility of changes due to the resources available to us. From today, 17th November, you will be able to select subject preferences through VsWare. When you log in to VsWare, click into 'Student Options'. Follow the instructions fully to select subject preferences for your son/daughter. Please note subject choices are not allocated on a first come first served basis - take time to talk to your son/daughter so that the correct preferences are entered. Please fill all preferences by 24th November at the latest - if no preferences are selected then they will be assigned for you. Please complete the subject choices in order of preference. That is, the subject you would most like to do is put in 1 and the subject you would least like to do is put in 7. You must fill a choice for each number 1-7. A video link to explain the selection process on VsWare is available here vsware.wistia.com/medias/kr62eqh02z or here vsware.wistia.com/medias/nr3tejf165 and a read along guide is available here support.vsware.ie/parent-app-notes-options Thank you for your cooperation with this process. Kind regards J Leonard

Nicola demonstrated how to do a check and spoke about the wide variety of symptoms to look for. Nicola very generously shared her own story of discovering that she had breast cancer, how it was dealt with and how it affected her life and that of her family. We feel it has been very beneficial to us all to gain greater awareness in how to protect ourselves and others.
