Beautiful new benches have been designed, created and installed by fourth year students Carrie Beatty, Jimmy Behan, Ethan Duigan and Calum O Connor on the school grounds. We are delighted with them. They really enhance the school grounds. The students are currently working on a few more for the serenity garden with their teacher Mr. Potterton. Well done to all involved. Ms Flanagan.

Sincere thanks to the staff and students involved in running the hugely successful Back to Breakfast initiative in the school last week. The turnout was far greater than we could have ever expected each day with well over one hundred students enjoying some healthy food and drinks each morning. Hopefully some good habits were picked up over the week.
Back to Breakfast - One Small Change

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,
As you are aware, a staff team in the school has been running the 'One Small Change' campaign since the beginning of the year. Each term they have introduced a new change for the benefit of our school population. To date, changes around exercise ('Walk on Wednesday') and around the consumption of fizzy drinks in our school environment have been introduced. The feedback received so far has been really positive.
With this in mind, the team are introducing their third change to coincide with the beginning of the term. From anecdotal research amongst the student population we are aware that a number of students do not eat breakfast. Some students break their fast at 11.02am while others do not break their fast until their 1.20pm. At this stage of the day they have either completed two or four of their six classes without food, which can have a detrimental impact on their learning and overall wellbeing.
According to research carried out by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) there is a strong correlation between eating breakfast and school performance among students:
"Children who do not eat breakfast at home or at school were less able to learn. Hunger can lead to lower math scores, attention problems, and behavior, emotional, and academic problems.
Children who eat a complete breakfast have been shown to work faster and make fewer mistakes in math problems and to perform better on vocabulary tests than those who ate only a partial breakfast. They also show improved concentration, alertness, comprehension, memory and learning.
Beyond academics, children who participate in school breakfast programs show decreased anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity. The breakfast offered can improve a child’s overall nutrition by providing her/him with necessary vitamins and minerals and can actually reduce the risk of obesity!"
The research certainly speaks for itself! To raise awareness of our campaign this term we are going to run a breakfast club next week from Monday to Friday. It will take place in the home economics room from 8.20-8.50am each morning and students (and teachers!) are invited to drop in and have something small and nutritious to begin their day.
Please see the attached PDF for further details.

Do you have any broken electrical items at home? If so could you cut off the lead (plugged out of course!) and bring in the lead and plug to classroom 11. The lead and plug can be used by fourth years in physics class.
Also if you have any old takeaway, ice cream, soup or lunch box containers please bring them in for use by the Home Economics classes for food storage.
Thank you,
Ms. Flanagan
