GDPR and SCHOOLS As you may be aware The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on the 25th May 2018, replacing the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive. This will have an impact on the school data processing activities and we must put in place actions to make the school Data Protection compliant. Data protection is the means by which the privacy rights of individuals are safeguarded in relation to the processing of their personal data. The Data Protection Acts, 1988 and 2003 confer rights on individuals as well as placing responsibilities on schools processing personal data. The new legislation recognises that the collection of personal data is big business and aims to ensure that responsible and ethical practices are put in place, along with safeguarding procedures. It will provide EU citizens with greater data protection and privacy. Under GDPR individuals will have more control over who has their information, what it is used for, who is it shared with and how it is processed. Schools accumulate substantial amounts of personal information about pupils, parents, staff, management and suppliers. It is therefore particularly important that appropriate and up-to-date policies and procedures are in place for the protection and proper use of all such accumulated data and records. Further information can be found at gdpr4schools.ie/ The following will apply to schools and their data as part of GDPR: 1. Personal data must be fairly and lawfully processed. 2. Accuracy - Personal data must be accurate and kept up to date. 3. Security - Personal data should be kept secure in terms of encryption and accessibility. 4. Keep data for no longer than is necessary. 5. Individuals rights - right of access to information, right to rectification. 6. Information is only shared with those who need it.

This term TY students undertook a module in which they knitted and crocheted cushions for St Carthages Church in Lismore. The year group also knitted hats for the innocent smoothie “big knit”. The hats will be on the smoothie bottles in October 2018 and 30c from each smoothie sold will go to Age Action Ireland.

This is a clarification on the recent text sent on school uniform. The proposed introduction of a school jacket has been done in consultation with the Student Council. Senior Students, the Parents' Council, the Teaching Staff and Board of Management. The following has been agreed: (1) If students want to wear a jacket they wear the new waterproof BCS jacket at a cost of €50 (2) A cheaper option will be provided in the form of a fleece at a cost of €30 (3) If students do not wish to purchase the new Jacket/Fleece they can wear their jacket to and from school but not as part of their uniform in class
